Nike Air Max 1

With a silhouette that has shaped fashion movements, made an impact in the world of athletics and ultimately become one of the most iconic trainers of all time, sportswear giants Nike have had us walking on air since they developed their infamous Air Max technology in the early 80’s.

First developed as an air pocket to be hidden in the heel to provide extra comfort, it wasn’t until 1987 that Nike finally released the style that we know and love today, with a silhouette that proved to be revolutionary at the time. The Nike Air Max 1 became the first in a long line of Air Max styles that would display Nike’s air unit in the heel, rather than keeping it concealed.

The Nike Air Max 1 set off a chain of events for Nike that would reshape the way that people viewed and wore their trainers. Air Max technology was designed to boost athletic performance, but the iconic and distinctive style was instantly adopted into street culture, where the trainer fast became an emblem of urban fashion.

The technology in the Air Max range continued to develop, and although the principle of the exposed air bubble never changed, other advancements led to fresh releases. Most notably, the Nike Air Max 90 (which was originally called the Nike Air Max III) led the way when it came to sneaker innovations in the 90’s. With a construction that was split into sections, the Nike Air Max 90 had the ability to be finished in a range of various materials and colours, as well as being the first known sneaker with a multi lace port system.
With innovative style that has stood the test of time thanks to their reputation and Nike’s mission to continuously develop fresh finishes, both the Nike Air Max 1 and Air Max 90 have become one of the most sought after trainers in the world, with their irreplaceable silhouettes defining an era of casual urban styling.
