The company was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry who was a drapers apprentice and at the early age of 21 opening the first store in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England in the 1920’s and since then Burberry has become defined by its outerwear heritage and its iconic trench coat. The internationally renowned Burberry Brit Trench Coat was originally commission by a war officer in 1914 to adapt their earlier officer’s coats for new combat requirements. Burberry added the D rings and the epaulettes and there the Trench coat was born. Following the success of the trench coat the Burberry check was recognised and registered as a trademark in the 1920’s, introducing the check as a lining in the coats.
The Burberry foundation has been established since 2008 and is a registered charity in England and Wales (1123102). The foundation is a philanthropic organisation giving support to young people helping them to achieve and realise their true potentials.
