Comme Des Garcons Brand Guide
Comme des Garcons (French for “as boys”) is a Japanese designer label founded by Rei Kawakubo in 1969. After introducing several new and unique lines, as well as collaborating with some of the most well known names in fashion such as Lacoste, Converse and Speedo, Comme des Garcons has become a highly sought after label in today’s ever fashion conscious society.
However, the arguably most well known and recognised association with CDG is its Play Collection, a range of clothing that was introduced in 1999 as a “casual street wear” line that sports the now infamous bug-eyed logo.
The New York based designer of the iconic logo, Filip Pagowski explains, “The PLAY logo happened just like that! I remember working on something, while all of a sudden not connected to anything, I got this idea of a red heart with a set of eyes. I drew it instantaneously and the first draft was it. The rest is history.”
Nowadays, CDG Play is an internationally acclaimed line, with celebrities such as Kanye West, Drake and Justin Bieber being spotted wearing the notorious heart, thanks to its diffusion designs printed onto a premium Japanese cotton fabric.
