Lyle & Scott Brand Guide
An Introduction To Lyle and Scott
Lyle & Scott have built a reputation of high quality designer men’s clothing over the last 130 years resulting in the brand becoming a firm favourite throughout the world. Founded in 1874 by William Lyle and Walter Scott from the small town of Hawick on the Scottish Boarders, they initially focused mainly on golfing attire and knitwear for the cold Scottish days. During the 1900’s the brand had a slight change in direction to the more modern styles at the time of sweaters and jumpers. This shift in direction drew the brand away from their sporting roots and onto the more fashion based market. This change happened while WWII was in full force, and as the post war markets were greatly reduced in Europe, the brand decided to focus their efforts on the American market. 1954 brought collaboration with French Designer Christian Dior creating an exclusive range of cashmere sweaters, featuring the scoop, square and collared necklines, some of which still used in today’s designs. This range was simple but a novel day to evening sweater range focused more for the American market. As the 60’s approached, the brand returned back to their roots of sporting attire, creating garments focusing solely on the golfing scene. 1968 saw the first truly golf inspired collection featuring the now iconic Eagle Logo on the chest. This collection was worn by many golfing greats including Gary Newman and Tony Jacklin along with celebrities including Ronnie Corbett and appeared on the Two Ronnies sketch a number of times. The brand has clothed important events throughout its career, including the Ryder Cup, where the Lyle and Scott Polo was an instant hit. Lyle and Scott had arrived.
During the 70’s - 80’s Lyle & Scott, like many sporting brands, became a staple on the football terraces, the simple v neck sweater boasting the yellow eagle was instantly recognisable to many throughout the country. Along with sport, the brand was adopted by the casuals and the punks. Today you are still certain to see many football supporters wearing Lyle and Scott polo shirts as they line the terraces of grounds up and down the country.
Eagle Logo and Collections
The iconic Lyle & Scott Logo was first used in 1968 and was seen on many Ryder Cup golfers that year. The Eagle is a symbol of Scotland, excellence and has strong golfing connections, which is why the founders felt this was a perfect logo for their brand. Over the years, a number of alterations have been seen to the logo, but all in all, the logo has pretty much stayed the same, cementing the brand in the sports and fashion scene and becoming instantly recognisable around the world.
Within the Lyle & Scott range, four collections are available Vintage, Heritage, Prestige and Club:
