A Closer Look at the Stone Island Marina Tank Shield Jacket
Stone Island are well-known for their highly technical, innovative apparel, utilising a whole slew of proprietary fabrics and treatments to create truly unique garments. But the Stone Island Marina collection is characterised by a more laid-back approach than we normally see from the Italian brand, being based on the more leisurely outdoor pursuit of yachting. But this shift down in gear doesn’t mean that Stone Island’s technology geniuses are resting on their laurels. Case in point: the Tank Shield jacket. Crafted from matte polyester fabric, the whole jacket is first assembled and then internally laminated with overlapping panels of a weatherproof, breathable membrane. This gives superior performance to the usual method of internally taping the seams individually, while at the same time giving a sleeker, almost seamless look.
This serves to compliment the simple styling of the jacket itself, with its classic windbreaker design. Despite the minimal design, storage is ample, with the jacket featuring two hand pockets to the waist with hidden zip closure, as well as large chest pockets with press stud fastening and a zip closing ‘mouth’, and hidden zip access at the sides for yet more storage options. In keeping with the rest of the Marina Collection, the Tank Shield Jacket sports a stripe motif, calling to mind its nautical inspiration.
The stripes to the sleeves are reminiscent of a naval officer’s dress uniform, while the bold branding to the back, with its almost stamped or stenciled looking font, continues the military surplus aesthetic. Interestingly, rather than being printed, these stripe details are actually laser-etched into the fabric, exposing the white-coloured membrane beneath the shell. Excessive? Perhaps, but we’re not going to begrudge Stone Island from showing off their technical prowess, especially when it adds up to such a masterful garment that keeps you ready for anything the spring/summer season might throw at you.
