6 Ways to Style the Chino

There’s nothing more versatile than the chino when it comes to menswear style and with fashion sub-genres being at their most varied, eclectic and widest range yet, we take a look at some of the looks on the street and how the classic style has been adapted.

Streetwear

Wide leg chino pant, rolled to ankle length and a bit of layering on the upper whether it be jacket and hoodie or t-shirt and shirt combo. Brands paired throughout the fashion subculture range in everything from Nike and Champion to Y3 and OAMC the brand founded by Luke Meyer, former creative director of the brand at the forefront of it all SupremeAs possibly the widest and most varied subculture of the already wide and varied fashion culture, let us just say the range of choice we have is so broad that there’s plenty of room for, activities so to speak? Our pick for the warmer months is a dress down attire with Norse Project Indigo cap, Patagonia pocket tee and a fresh pair of Adidas Yung-1s.

Heritage Gent

The beauty of being able to pair a polo with plimsolls and a comfy trouser is exactly what makes this look so popular and above all, distinctive. The heritage gent would go nowhere in matching garments so a contrast is an intricate detail not to be missed. Known to rock the Beige before any of the modern-day adopters, the heritage gent has been decking chinos with the smartest of casual looks since there was a history to document. Fred Perry Polo and Novesta Star Master topped off by Ray Bans in Havanna Brown.

Scandinavian Minimalist

There is nothing more crisp and clean than the Scandinavian look and this is mainly down to the simplicity of every ensemble, the chino being a regular piece. The sleek style is usually complemented by the polished finishing of tapered legwear showing that all important top of footwear and bare or sock covered ankle. Striped Albam tee, Grenson Sneaker 1 and APC Tote places you in touching distance of the highest of fashion, with the refinement of a simple colour blocked aesthetic.

Surplus Solider

Attennnnntion! The post-mod-army-surplus-super-solider is known to get the dress down fashion as regimented as possible, pairing a smart casual style with essential men’s wear items to create the cool civilian uniform. Taking the old army sensibilities of the Clarks Desert Boot in a versatile beeswax colouring, and pairing it with a simple oxford shirt by the way of Norse Projects and a classic Baracuta Harrington jacket.

Contemporary Cool

That’s right, Chinos can totally set off a high fashion outfit as a contemporary choice, especially paired with the cool colours for the palette. Take the pairing of the ghostly white Margiela T-shirt and Sock Racer, then place a crisp blue stripe CDG shirt over the top. Give the T-shirt a tuck too for a variation to the norm, plus a crop to the trouser to accentuate the ankle bootie. The style is in the quality and design, the simplicity of the look with its pale tones and minimal patterning is intrinsically Comme Des Garçons, as well as representing a deconstructed style in the vein of Margiela, taking the typical fashion look and breaking it down to its sensibilities.

Casual Terrace

A match in heaven, the BOSS Green polo and adidas Gazelle work in conjunction to present a matched colour scheme. Where the usual denim would sit comes a change in the chino, colour matched with the gum sole of the adidas Gazelle Super and paired perfectly with the grey, white and blue colours of the BOSS Green Paddy 3 Polo Shirt. With influences of heritage and streetwear, this outfit works as a classy dress down approach still incorporating a classic adidas silhouette into the look.

Kind of Blue: Summer Shirts Edition

Welcome reader. Relax, take a seat, and press play on our summer shirt feature. Drink? We thought you’d never ask.

Short Sleeves

The sight of a short sleeve blue shirt strikes fear into a number of men and with justification. It can be a divisive affair, more pie guzzling than Ryan Gosling, but don’t fret we’re here to help!

For menswear, there are certain brands you can guarantee to provide a simple and effective design British sensibilities. The highest of our priced short sleeves but fitted perfectly off the peg for all body types. Small details like a contrasting top button, logo tab to pocket and stripe details to the side seams give the shirt unique embellishments to push it away from its contemporaries.
Although your token blue shirt is a light blue number, this deep blue creation from the Polo brand is a versatile offering that can work in casual and more formal designs with it’s contrasting blue offering a foil to most staple formalwear palettes. Crafted from a featherweight twill fabric, this is perfect as a summer shirt to air it all out.
Offering a perfect middle ground to the above offerings, this mid-blue oxford offering from the laurel wreath is casual wear through and through with button-down collar, box pleat and contrasting locker loop to the rear of the shirt.

Striped

For all you men in blazers, this is the section for you. Honestly, the next time you lean those elbow patches on the bar to talk about the footsie 100, you won’t look like a Richard.

Clean cut, no-nonsense, and surprisingly not an eccentric offering from Comme De Garçons shirts. Show your fashion awareness with the Japanese brand’s best in men’s formal attire taking an eloquent approach to the men’s striped shirt.
Kings of French cool, APC bring a minimalist contemporary air to every seasonal offering from the brand, and it’s a consistent presenting in this striped shirt with a cream and blue mix in its colouring. A timeless approach to a timeless item.
This typically preppy garment might not be striped per se, but it fits our agenda and you’ve gotten this far so why should you care, this shirt is too nice to kick up a fuss.

Hawaiian

Pigeonholing this in as it’s our only Hawaiian that fits the criteria, and it’s not really a Hawaiian at that, more a box fit, box fresh, punching above its weight, casual commando in the fashion field.

You see why we included this now, right? Relaxed boxy fit, soft fabric composition, multi-button collar options, it’s a swiss army knife in a shirt.

Chambray

The carbon fibre of the blue shirt world, the chambray is you high performing supercar in your wardrobe. More of a Tesla in Aesthetic than a Bugatti, it’s what’s under the hood that counts, and the chambray is packing some serious power.

This genuinely might be the greatest shirt ever made in the history of the greatest shirts ever made. APC has the uncanny knack of knocking every garment out of the metaphorical park of quality, and this Japanese cotton clad chambray is a year-round killer.
Dyed with indigo and stonewash to create a denim blue complexion it’s ‘Murica in a classy chambray design, embracing the denim colour to great effect on a casual and lightweight design. Pair with more denim for the authentic rawhide look.
Norse Projects have the uncanny ability to nail the a-typical stylings of any staple garment with their Scandinavian minimalist air. When we’re eventually able to 3d print objects by verbal demand, the scream of ‘Alexa, Chambray Shirt’ will yield this exact design.

Oxford

Even the word ‘Oxford’ connotes a world of regal, timely gentlemen and women oozing the aroma of books and rich mahogany, taking the bimmer out for a spin to the local shop to pick up a box of earl grey in anticipation of afternoon tea and scones.

It’s hard to offer a shirt selection without omitting Ralph Lauren, they’ve dominated the preppy shirt creation since the dawn of man (that’s a fact). Does what it says on the tin etc.
Take the previous piece on the Anton Chambray and replace the c-word with Oxford. Consistency.
To be honest, as much as I love oxford shirts, they’re just the same thing with a different logo. You cannot go wrong with the selection at hand (Unless you don’t buy any).

Overshirts

The book ender of sorts, a good overshirt (or shacket if you’re so inclined) is the layering item you need in your arsenal. Add it to a summer wardrobe for a lightweight layer and throw it under a big coat for the winter lets focus on summer for now though.

Current kings of the overshirt, Stone Island place their tech sensibilities on a metallic nylon overshirt. Fastening to the front, with a statement crinkle effect and supremo construction courtesy of the Italian maestros.
Combining the shirt and a zip with great aplomb is the dark indigo iteration in the Paul Smith zip shirt. Featuring twin patch pockets to the chest and buttoned cuffs, it’s a typically subtle affair from the rainbow man, offering the classic British fashion sensibilities with a contemporary air.
This is literally, at the fundamental of it all, a blue shirt, that fact cannot be disputed. It’s a blue shirt you wear over things, like an overshirt. Therefore it deserves being placed in our ‘kind of blue’ overshirts section. Plus it also happens to be a denim jacket, therefore, you can wear with any of the above items and it’ll look crispy.

Why You Need To Invest In A ‘Colourblock’ Piece

‘Colourblock’ pieces are pretty self-explanatory, it’s an item that typically features several colours on it, for example, Red body, Blue left sleeve & Yellow right sleeve. It hails back to the vintage days when brands such as NikeAdidas, Reebok and even Ralph LaurenFred Perry used to release jazzy windbreakers and patterned garments that had a strong sporting influence. As ever, fashion comes in cycles, and we’re being treated to another dose of strong colour palettes. From footwear upwards, brands are making it easier to colour coordinate an outfit with the wealth of shades on display.

One of our favourite colour blocks in the footwear world came in the form of the recent adidas drop of the Yung-1s, channelling a distinctive 90s running silhouette with panelled mixtures of colour. Offering a quiet and loud version of sorts, both colourways offer a base palette to compliment a variety of blue and navy tones, with variations on red and orange also lending themselves to the colour block nicely.

Making its comeback due to a resurgence in ‘dad’ styling or ‘dadcore’ as unusual people like to call it. You need some ‘wavey’ garms to match with them creps now don’t you. Most brands are jumping on the trend and are producing pieces with this colourful format, but only a select few are nailing this aesthetic and we are going to point out which path you should follow when investing in this bold style.

A basic colour blocking style can be seen from brands like Fred Perry with their sporting influence being worn on their sleeve or with this vibrant apricot polo the collar, offering a base colour with accents of blocked colour. On the other spectrum brands like Albam are looking to deck their outwear in the brightest colour combos possible, this parka taking on a similar blocked aesthetic to the popular Ralph Lauren Snow Beach collection that had a re-release recently, again taking a sporting style and adapting it to an interesting style.

A brand that channels colour blocking through every piece, from the construction to the branding is designer label Ami, placing a Parisian touch to each garment from their tricolour branded crew necks to their panneled and colour blocked designs seen below. With their contemporary take on staple styles, the inclusion of a vintage arrangement of colour blocking adds a timeless touch to their newer styles. Similar in ethos is the heritage style of BOSS and their variations. One of our favourite styles for the warmer months is a clean polo, and the BOSS Green arm of the company has channelled classic sporting styles to provide a colour blocked and a pinstriped polo shirt. Within their accessories, there’s even a blocked beach bag, perfect for everyday lifestyle use.

An alternative way to colour block is by wearing bold colours on different garments, i.e Blue shorts & a Red top, just to create a striking juxtaposition. Our recent minimalist footwear blog post seen here allowed us to challenge a blank canvas of styling with a clean white shoe, one of our favourite looks is the adidas Continental 80, Champion sweats and Polo shorts, bringing a preppy summer look that lends its colour palette perfect across each item.

Consider yourself informed and make a move before anyone else, it’s a look that you definitely don’t want to miss out. It works all year round, and yes, even in the Winter. Just because the weather looks dull outside doesn’t mean you have to dress accordingly, rock around in bright colours on dull days because you know it’s going to stand out and liven up your aura.

French Navy seamen in the area were given a striped woven top that featured 21 horizontal stripes (one for each of Napoleon’s victories) as their uniform, known as a matelotor marinière which helped them to be easily identified.
