Style Sessions

Outfit-Winters-End

Outfit – Step into Spring … British spring!

Spring is finally upon us and we can start to de-layer and look forward to showing a bit more flesh. For now, however, we’re in that up and down phase where it isn’t quite safe to take too much of a risk but we have started to dig out our summer cotton for some of that spring layering. Here’s our idea of a perfect mid-week ensemble for you to wake up that spring wardrobe ready for some summer action. Time to turn up those chino bottoms, throw on a cotton shirt and remember a sweater.

Outfit - Folk, Albam, Norse Projects, Maison Margiela

Today’s outfit features cotton pants by Albam, light cotton shirt by Folk, cotton sweatshirt and marl knit socks by Norse Projects, suede and leather trainers by Maison Margiela. We thought we’d add one of our favourite newcomers, this Grenson, citrus and deep musk scented candle. Mainly because it’s scent is now filling the living rooms of quite a few of us here at Aphrodite HQ and we want to share the love.

Shia Labeouf if a style icon

Why Is Shia Labeouf Such A Style Icon?

If you’re an active visitor on social media platforms you will have seen Shia Labeouf at some point being referred to as a style god. I know what you’re thinking, “But he just wears old vintage tees, random leggings and some beat up trainers”, and I can’t disagree and say he doesn’t because he does. But, he has the power to make anything look good, the fact he can confidently turn up in a pair of bright pink leggings and still look cool is beyond me. And before he starts getting judged, Ellen Degeneres (From the Ellen Show, of course) made a bet that if he could get snapped by the paparazzi in pink leggings that she would donate $50,000 to cancer research.

‘Normcore’ is making a triumphant return, (for those of you who don’t know what that is I’ll sum it up). Normcore is when a person dresses purposefully dull or uncool, making them ironically cool…What a bizarre time we live in right? It goes against the social norms of what makes someone’s style cool and this is why Shia is basically the King of Normcore, so much so that it recently emerged that Kanye West took most of Shia’s wardrobe, and you know if Yeezy is taking your stuff that you’re undeniably fashionable.

How To Dress Like Shia Labeouf

So how can you replicate this look? Well, you have come to the right place, you essentially just need some casual pieces. Items from Patagonia are a great place to start, the brand has a minimal style that doesn’t make waves, but provides amazing comfort for the wearer and the jackets are perfect for layering.

If you want to master the normcore look, you are going to need an oversized jumper that you can throw on every day, Saturdays NYC have an amazing option for you to go with, featuring a simple graphic logo, this can be put with so many different fits and will look great, whilst keeping you insanely snug. Or if you want a military aesthetic like Shia, the recent collection of Made in the USA from APC features military-inspired graphics. The beauty of this sort of style is, even if you wear it all relentlessly it’ll help the casual aesthetic. The weird part of it is, it takes a lot of effort to look like you haven’t made any effort, but it is totally worth it.

Nine times out of ten you will catch Shia in a cap, whether it’s because he wants to try to remain anonymous or not that up for debate, but he always chooses to have some simple embroidery on them, one of his most notable caps is an insanely beat up 2nd Armored Division cap, which he wears frequently and even shares with Kanye. If you want the same style cap but with a simpler logo and a more wearable appeal then look no further than the Norse Projects Twill Cap for an effortless way to finish your ultra-casual look.

Comme des Garcons Shirt

Outfit – Tokyo to Paris

This season we welcomed Japanese label Commes des Garçons Shirt to the Aphrodite family and as their array of t-shirts are too good not to shout about we thought we’d make some form of an introduction by teaming our favourite edition, the Tartan Logo T-Shirt, with a few pieces from the brand’s Paris based neighbours, thus providing a bit of fashion trivia along the way.

As French as Comme des Garcons Shirt may at first glance appear, it is always as a surprise that many learn its Japanese (Tokyo) origins and the brand is most certainly not alone in this theme as there are others who follow a similar suit, APC for instance, a Paris based brand founded by Tunisian fashion designer Jean Touitou. While designers Martin Margiela, of another Paris based label Maison Margiela, and Raf Simons, who held a three-year title as Dior’s creative director, are both of Belgian descent.

Outfit - Margiela, CDG, Adidas x Raf Simons, Y3

Today’s outfit features tartan text t-shirt by Comme des Garçons Shirt, black oversized hoodie by Maison Margiela, black jeans by APC, burgundy Ozweego III trainers by Adidas x Raf Simons and not forgetting this black logo backpack by Y3‘s Yohji Yamamoto because you cant speak of Paris and not include this technical genius, click link to see what we mean!

Outfit - Pastels and prints

Outfit – Pastels and patterns

Our growing streetwear collection consists of some of your favourite brands and with the fashion genre quite possibly being at is most eclectic yet it was no surprise to see this season’s trends having an element of ‘clash’. With pastels, stripes and of course the relentless camo making prominent appearances we thought we’d throw something together to remind you it doesn’t have to be one or the other anymore.

Stussy, Penfield, Vans and Eastpak

Its all about the clash, outfit features black corduroy trousers by Nudie Jeans, striped colour block rugby shirt by Stussy, pink cotton coach jacket by Penfield, camo print waist bag by Eastpak and suede trainers by Vans.

Sartorial Minimalism

Outfit – The Sartorial Minimalist

Norse Projects continue with their consistent minimal design silhouettes, and with every drop of collection items comes a ripple of excitement around Aphrodite HQ. Nothing has faltered in their SS18 collection which ranges in everything from spring pastel stripes to technically designed and constructed weather resistant jackets, and of course all the Norse staples in between. Here we chose a favorite from this weeks drop and popped it into a nice little weekend ensemble for you (you’re welcome). Introducing, the Norse Projects SS18 Jens Seersucker Zip Shirt, a navy seersucker cotton with black check detail, 2-way zip fastening, and discreet side pockets this is simplistic design at its finest.

Outfit - Norse Projects, APC, Grenson

Complete the look with this APC fine knit stripe jumper (or a crisp white oxford shirt to keep it even simpler), Norse Projects chino and contrasting marl socks and these super comfortable and durable Grenson canvas sneakers. All pieces that can be kept on rotation which is exactly how we like it. Have a good weekend.

Outfit - Weather permitting

Outfit – Weather permitting

It seems we’re officially into that teasingly annoying part of British springtime, temperatures seeming comfortably warmer one day and freezing the next or bright and sunny one day and miserably dull the next. Dressing for the occasion can be tricky but we have your back with these weekly installments curated to deter the ever-changing weather from hindering your plans (or your beloved footwear). Here you go lads, a few of your favorites here …

Outfit - Stone Island, Paul & Shark, Y3

The latest installment from the Stone Island Marina collection was this long sleeve striped tee, perfect for this in-between weather and a staple piece you will have in rotation season after season. Styled here with a khaki Stone Island cargo short, navy Paul & Shark zip hoodie, white suede Y3 trainers, Ray-Ban aviators and every wardrobe essential item Jason Mark repel, for those caught off guard by the rainy days that are upon us.

Outfit Grid – The Lazy Weekend Edit

This weekend called for an agenda free kick back in preparation for the bank holiday ahead. Nipping out for a paper, a coffee or meeting a friend for an afternoon bite was about as strenuous as it got and we’re easing into the new week with contentment. With that in mind we thought we’d throw together a nice, easy but comfortable (and of course stylish) ensemble that wouls perfectly depict your future lazy weekend intentions.

Outfit Grid - Ami, Margiela, APC

It was classically refined comfort all round last week as we got a sneak peek at the Maison Margiela and APC SS18 collection pieces (in store and online now) and this green striped, terry cloth, crew neck really caught our eye for numerous reasons. Styled here with APC soft jersey joggers, AMI heavy denim jacket, CDG x Spalwart trainers and wallet by APC … accessorise with a coffee carry cup, newspaper under arm and your favourite sunnies. We would like to point out that this is also a perfect travel outfit, not that we’re trying put ideas into your head though, just a passing thought!

Outfit Grid

Outfit grid – A British Culture Tribute

After heading down to one of our favourite local music venues Hoochie Coochie last weekend for an intimate and euphoric gig with British post-punk legends A Certain Ratio, we’ve since felt an overwhelming sense of 80’s nostalgia spurring us to take a (fashion) trip back to the post-punk/new wave era, where three things are most definitely prominent throughout. Laurel Wreath clad polo shirts, brilliantly British tailoring and those unmistakable three stripes. Here we pay homage to some old classics …

If you were asked to think back to 80’s Britain, OK so a flash of BBCs Grange Hill, The Young Ones or The Two Ronnies might spring to mind but, you’d also have at least one of you or a mate sporting some form of Fred Perry or Adidas whether it be a classic polo and tennis shoes or full branded shell suit. Even a nice bit of Paul Smith tailoring if you were attending a wedding or feeling swish of a weekend. Here’s an everyday version of the above three that still hail and show no signs of being forgotten about, with a couple essentials from our friends overseas.

Outfit Grid - Fred Perry, Paul Smith, Adidas

The Fred Perry bomber, Paul Smith polo shirt and Adidas 350 silhouette all make for a recognisably British style and championed by a rage of famous faces from Robert Pattinson to Oasis front men the Gallagher brother and of course the late and exceptionally talented Amy Winehouse. No British look is complete without a sturdy and durable pair of denims and at this we would like to introduce (if not already acquainted) you to the Swedish denim brand Nudie Jeans, organic, fair trade and an Aphrodite HQ favourite. Don’t forget your contrasting socks for that quirky finish.

The North Face – Spring Summer Edit

The weather outside is no longer looking as frightful, which means spring is slowly slipping towards us. So we can finally put our The North Face Nuptse jackets to the back of the wardrobe, and start to browse the internet for our new go-to jacket. You don’t need to look far, as The North Face have got your back, with their selection of lightweight retro inspired jackets.

If the 90’s teal colour way is a bit too out there for your taste, don’t fret, they have resurrected The North Face 1990 Mountain Jacket in a muted cream and navy colourway. Not only does it look good, the jacket has fully sealed seams and wind resistant technology to lock in heat and prevent any moisture from getting into the jacket, because the last thing you want is to get damp in a April shower.
