It’s official: Air Max Month is once again upon us. The sneakerhead’s holiday has been a staple of Nike’s release calendar for the last few years and has seen the introduction of all-new Air Max technologies like Vapormax, alongside re-releases of some seriously covetable heat from the brand’s back catalogue. For 2018, the lineup is as eye-popping as ever, (more on that coming soon: watch this space) and is kicked off with the second drop of a relatively obscure rarity from the Swoosh archives: the Air Span II in the classic ‘Volt’ colourway.
A surprise addition to Nike’s lineup for 2018, the return of the Air Span earlier in the year was welcomed by collectors and OG sneakerheads alike. Why? While the Air Span II may lack the shock-and-awe flashiness of the Air Max range with their visible Air bubbles, it remains something of a connoisseur’s favourite, and for good reason: this is a real workhorse sneaker, easy to work into whatever outfit you choose thanks to its well-balanced lines, remaining neither too chunky nor too low-profile.
It doesn’t just look good, but it feels amazing on-foot too thanks to the combination of the full-length Phylon sole unit (the first shoe to utilise the material back in 1990, FYI) and super-plush padding to the collar and footbed. The Volt colourway, much like the Laser Blue before it, is also a winner, with the black underlays contrasting superbly with the rest of the materials, all set off with subtle pops of Nike’s iconic Volt yellow-green; it’s a 90s throwback in the best possible way.
As usual, numbers for these are limited, so make sure not to sleep if you want to grab a piece of history for yourself.
