Maison Margiela Fusion Sneaker Returns in a Clinical White
Martin Margiela built his legendary brand around a postmodern, deconstructed aesthetic, often piecing different garments together in unusual ways, or removing key components altogether to alter the functionality completely. This has resulted in some of fashion’s most iconic — and controversial — garments, such as the house’s signature Tabi boots and cutaway shirts. Though Margiela himself has since retired from his namesake brand, his spirit still lives on through John Galliano’s equally-provocative designs. Last season, Maison Margiela debuted their latest take on the chunky sneaker trend, and it was one of their most head-turning yet. Dubbed the Margiela Fusion Sneaker, the silhouette was a divisive masterpiece of industrial design, taking components from the Maison’s various other sneaker models and creating a haphazard collage, complete with copious amounts of visible glue, epoxy and paint. There’s nothing else like it, and it perfectly embodies the cut-and-sew approach Maison Margiela is known for.
Now for Spring/Summer 2019, the Fusion Sneaker returns to the brand’s lineup, this time dipped in various shades of white which serve to further emphasise the artistry on display. Asymmetrical, overlapping panels in a variety of materials — from luxurious leather to honeycomb mesh — make up the uppers, while the laces are cut, frayed and knotted together, ridding them of their functionality but adding to the deconstructed aspect of the sneaker. The sole unit — appearing held together by thickly-applied rubber epoxy — is tall, chunky and adds considerable heft to the shoe, which lets it sit alongside the rest of Margiela’s SS19 collection perfectly.
The Margiela Fusion Sneaker’s signature look is also in full effect, with excessive amounts of hand-applied glue, paint and epoxy featuring throughout, giving each sneaker a truly individual finish. It all adds up to a bold, uncompromising shoe that’s perfect for making a heavy statement this summer. This handmade aesthetic doesn’t come cheap, of course: the Maison Margiela Fusion Sneaker is available, in strictly limited numbers, for £1125 from Aphrodite Clothing now.
