Maison Margiela Bring Safety to the Streets with their Security Runner
At what first glance seemed like a passing fad, the chunky ‘dad trainer’ has now firmly established itself as a bona fide trend, and one that shows no sign of going anywhere soon: most brands and fashion houses have their own iteration of the style. Because of this, it’s no longer enough to simply slap an oversized sole onto any old trainer; new additions to the stable need to have more interesting detailing to help them stand out. So trust Maison Margiela, under the deconstructivist eye of designer John Galliano, to come up with the goods in the form of the all-new Security Sneaker.
Drawing inspiration once more from military surplus gear, this time from the 90s, the Maison present this all-terrain trainer in a mixture of premium leather and suede with ballistic nylon underlays. A far cry from the sleekness of the iconic Replica Sneaker, the Security Sneaker boasts a bulbous, front-heavy silhouette, toughened up with the addition of texturised rubber bumpers to the heel and toe, and — brace yourself — steel toe caps for that true mil-surp feel. The lacing, too, is its own talking point, with elasticated laces held in place with additional elasticated lacing coils, portraying the DIY aesthetic that’s been Maison’s hallmark since its inception. All this rides on a sole unit reminiscent of their Retro Runner, with the aggressive cleated outsole tying together the off-road look perfectly.
Despite its in-your-face proportions, the materials and colour-blocking make the sneaker surprisingly versatile: use them to balance out a more relaxed outfit, or as a visual anchor with slim or cropped trousers. However and wherever you wear them, the robust construction — and those steel toe caps — are sure to keep you feeling secure in your investment.
The Maison Margiela Security Sneaker in White / Navy is available online and in-store now, priced at £499. Stay tuned for more from Maison Margiela as the latest season drop arrives.
