New Balance 991 Arrives In Carafe Brown

Crafted in the Flimby for over 40 years, the New Balance Made in England range has become the benchmark for premium quality. Hand cutting, sewing and assembling trainers has become a somewhat speciality of the local workers, as proven by the brand’s latest drop: the New Balance 991 in a silky smooth Carafe colourway.

Pretty nice if we do say so ourselves… They’re crafted with a breathable mesh base that becomes engulfed by a seriously soft suede. (Try saying that three times fast!) And branded embroidery is added to the tongue in a contrasting white thread, as well as to a 3M reflective panel to the heel where it spells out ‘991’.

Internally the kings of comfort have offered up thick padding that compliments the performance insert in-sole, an ergonomically shaped sole that delivers high-end stability. Abzorb technology is also used underfoot, it’s a responsive foam cushioning that dissipates shock effectively resulting in a softer feel every time you step out in these kicks. While an N-durance rubber outsole is attached to the trainers with its branded traction pattern for optimum grip out in the streets.

The tri-tone sole compliments the carafe brown upper as it arrives dressed in a neutral colour palate that somehow still manages to stand out. New Balance readies the 991 in ‘Castlerock’

Launching at Aphrodite on the 20th of October…

One of the most iconic silhouettes of all time, the New Balance 991 Trainer offers a truly timeless silhouette and unparalleled styling versatility. These kicks are made in New Balance’s Flimby factory so you already know that the craftsmanship is going to be spot on. The upper is constructed using a breathable mesh toebox that finds itself being encapsulated by premium suede and nubuck overlays. New Balance branding can be found in the form of a 3M reflective ‘N’ logo, while further branding is embroidered to the tongue of the shoe.

As always the quality upper is placed atop of one of New Balance’s tech filled soles, in this instance they’ve opted for an Abzorb midsole to offer cushioning and compression resistance, basically they’re incredibly comfortable. (I mean, aren’t all New Balance) The two-tone sole is joined to a rubber outsole for added durability and increased traction while translucent windows allow you to peek into the technology housed inside.

Lets run back through… Dad trainer style, check. Grey colourway, check. Super comfortable, check. Versatile, check.
Yeah, I don’t think that New Balance could make a more ‘New Balance’ Trainer if they tried! Dropping on the 20/10/22 you can pick up a pair at Aphrodite where they retail for £209.00

NB 40th Anniversary 01

New Balance set to drop a commemorative 991 to celebrate 40 years of ‘Made in UK’

Celebrating 40 years of manufacturing the ‘Made in UK’ range.

NB 40th Anniversary 01

Despite New Balance’s rapid growth in recent years, and subsequently a rapid increase in demand, the Boston based brand continue to produce their ‘Made in UK’ collection in their Flimby factory; Situated on the Cumbrian coastline, the factory relies on the skill of experienced local workers to produce almost 28,000 pairs of sneakers weekly. As testament to the quality of craftsmanship, and to celebrate the 40th anniversary of ‘Made in UK’,  New Balance are gearing up to release a commemorative 991 colourway.

The New Balance 991 is arguably one of the brand’s most iconic models. Inspired by the Made in US 990 and the Made in UK 1500,  the silhouette offers pure style and an unparalleled ‘dad sneaker’ aesthetic. Since its debut back in 2001, almost every 991 colourway has been produced in Flimby, maintaining the same expected standards and quality of the factory.

And the 40th anniversary 991 is no exception.

NB 40th Anniversary 03

Dressed in a stunning, yet simple, grey colourway, this sneaker looks set to join a long  line of sought after New Balance kicks. Pigskin suede makes up the toe-cap, side panelling and heel of the shoe while a mesh toe-box offers breathability to the sneaker. Leather beige detailing provides a pleasing contrast to the grey colour scheme, sprucing up the tongue, heel and toe-box of the kicks. Reflective patches can be found at the heel, where ‘991’ is neatly embroidered into the shoe, as well as making up the iconic ‘N’ New balance branding to the side of the shoe.

To the sole of the sneaks, ENCAP midsole cushioning combines lightweight foam with a durable polyurethane rim to deliver all-day support. C-Cap technology also provides support to the forefoot of the shoe while ABZORB crash pads absorb impact through a combination of cushioning and compression resistance. The two-tone paintjob adds to the overall style of the shoe while transparent windows show off the ABZORB pads found in the heritage kicks.

NB 40th Anniversary 08

Reminders of the 40th anniversary are placed on the in-sole and the inside of the shoes tongue, as well as the aptly decorated commemorative box the kicks arrive in. Expected to launch on the 5th May, you’ll be able to get your hands on a pair at Aphrodite Clothing.

20 Years Crafted, 20 Years A Staple, 20 Years Of The 991

Dig out the balloons, light the candles and suspend the bunting because the New Balance 991 is turning 20 this year. For two stellar decades, the shoe has charmed the masses with its perfectly pared-back allure. That humble but fierce combination of grey undertones and ABZORB cushioning has simultaneously propelled the silhouette into a true cult favourite and now the Boston-based brand is celebrating the design with a special commemorative release. The New Balance 991 20th anniversary shoe launches this Friday 26th February 2021 and Aphrodite is a proud stockist.

To mark the upcoming launch, we’re taking a retrospective look back at the iconic 991 while unravelling details over the latest celebratory iteration. Keep reading to find out more.

History of the New Balance 991: 2001

In the same year that hit mockumentary The Office hit UK tv screens, Fast & Furious premiered at the box office and Jamiroquai’s A Funk Odyssey topped the album charts, Boston hailing brand New Balance rolled out the 991 sneaker under its 99x series. The 99x series was first conceptualised in ‘82 when the original 990 trainer began transcending the footwear industry with heaps of innovative tech. In the years leading up to 2001, the line left little to the imagination; toying with ground-breaking cushioning, unheard of proportions and larger-than-life NB credentials – to which the label has become so synonymous.

New Balance 991 20th Anniversary

The arrival of the 991 in the early noughties signified a changing of the guard for the 99x’s lineage. The New Balance 991 was noticeably more streamline, still in its identifiable low-profile look, but with less emphasis at the toebox. It proved to be the contemporary overhaul the dynasty needed and it quickly began stealing the hearts of multiple generations. It was also the first shoe in the brand’s roster to carry ABZORB cushioning in both its front and beneath the heel, leading the shoe, and subsequently the 99x series, to become closely associated with immeasurable comfort.

The New Balance 991 in popular culture: 2001 – 2021

In the years following its inception, the 991 yielded mass appeal. Managing to harmonise performance-primed tech with an understated, athletic aesthetic, the silhouette pulled in the approval of millennials and the globe’s A-List – Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Kanye West to name just a few of the shoe’s distinguished fans. Most notably, late Apple founder and tech maestro, Steve Jobs, frequently donned the sneakers on the streets and to global conferences, where they quickly helped form his signature look.

New Balance 991 Sneakers Anniversary

Of recent, New Balance has embraced its cross-generational stance, famously attributing the phrase “worn by supermodels in London and dads in Ohio” to its mission statement. The concept of ‘normcore’ – a trend summarised by the rejection of extravagance – reached its peak in 2018 and enabled the resurgence of the 991 under the ‘Dad Shoe’ umbrella. In fact, New Balance birthed the ‘Dad Shoe’ trend way before it became accepted by the mainstream and designers in their hundreds jumped on the bandwagon.

The New Balance 991 possesses a certain je ne sais quoi that continues to make it a frontrunner of the scene, even twenty years after we first laid eyes on it.

New Balance 991 Anniversary release: 2021

This Friday (26/02/2021) marks the release of the New Balance 991 anniversary special. Mimicking its debut look, the trainer melds a two-tone grey colourway, with pig suede overlays, navy ‘N’ logos and ABZORB cushioning to supply a wardrobe staple that we’re all rightfully familiar with. Crafted proudly in the UK in the brand’s Flimby factory, this one-off model boasts ‘2001’ embroidery at the backbone whilst a 20th anniversary woven patch sits to the inner tongue.
