Conquering the globe one design at a time…
When Carhartt first burst onto the scene in Detroit in the late 1800s its roots were firmly footed in workwear. The label, which is the brainchild of Hamilton Carhartt, carried great clout in the United States thanks to its rapport with industrial firms who were stationed up and down the country. You see, Carhartt had struck gold early on in the business’s inception – he found himself, and his namesake company, responsible for designing and manufacturing high-quality garments for labourers and railroad workers in their thousands.
Once those monumental contracts were secured next the brand began to branch out and its mainstream clothing quickly garnered the attention of creatives from further afield, including Edwin founder and German denim specialist Edwin Faeh. After striking a lucrative deal with the Carhartt family, which meant he could develop, design and export products of his own, using the brand’s distinctive DNA, Faeh trademarked the European offshoot and crowned it Carhartt WIP, or Carhartt Work In Progress.
From 1989 onwards, Carhartt WIP has outfitted every subculture under the sun, yielding a particularly large grasp on the BMX and skating scenes. Celebrated stars including Justin Bieber, Hailey Bieber, Kanye West, Ryan Gosling and David Beckham, to name just a few, have all pledged their allegiance to WIP’s apparel; further amplifying its allure and ubiquitous nature in pop culture.
Even we ourselves have witnessed the demand for Carhartt WIP pieces first hand, with requests to stock it coming in thick and fast from both our local customer base and our digital clientele. So here it is, it’s your lucky day. We’re proud stockists of the streetwear icon – that must sound like music to the ears surely? It certainly makes us feel proud. To get you acquainted with what’s up for grabs, we’ve taken the liberty of running you through a synopsis below, thank us later...
First up we have the mighty timeless overshirt, a style that’s aged gracefully right alongside Carhartt, right from its heavy-duty origin to its now evergreen status. Up for the steal in tawny and black colourways, the Carhartt Reno Shirt Jacket is a worthy investment. It’s unlined and garment-dyed which means the silhouette is slightly more lightweight but also richer in colour than your standard shirt. Weighed down with a buttoned chest pocket, the trusty piece comes rounded off with the brand’s iconic patch front and centre.
Of course, we couldn’t go on without mentioning the label’s t-shirt selection too. Laden with tongue-in-cheek graphics, you’ll be able to spot these organic cotton winners from a mile off. They do a great job at demonstrating the label’s playful sensibility. And we personally love the brand’s ability to not take itself too seriously while positioned in an industry that sometimes insists on being a little too austere.
Elsewhere in the collection, you’ll uncover classic cargo pants and branded baseball caps – just the pieces you need to complete your ensemble. Check out the latest Carhartt WIP collection today at Aphrodite in-store & online.
