How To Wear Shorts For Men

When it comes to hot weather you can’t really go far wrong with a good pair of shorts. Versatile, breezy and warm-weather appropriate, they come in a variety of flavours sure to suit an array of styling preferences. With the opportunity to bear calves coming for many of us fleetingly at best, it can be hard to choose exactly which kind of breathable bottoms to go for, and furthermore, what to pair alongside them. In an effort to answer some of your most burning questions we’ve not only rounded up a selection of some of our favourites from each category but gave our two cents on how we would be donning them this summer.

Cargo Shorts

Cargo Shorts – Styling Suggestion:

For those of us who never have enough room for personal possessions, a pair of well-rounded cargo shorts could be perfect for you. Functional, relaxed and boasting a satisfying amount of pockets, this particular pair from nautical brand Paul & Shark showcase exactly why the style is becoming increasingly popular. Boasting a distinctly metallic sheen, they come crafted from econyl, a nylon fabric which makes use of recycled fibres metallic sheen finish, the shorts come with two large flap pockets alongside the addition of both rear and side entry compartments. Given an elasticated waist for a more comfortable feel a woven patch completes the look with a touch of unmistakable branding. Paired here with a DSquared shirt, Puma Mirage Sport trainers and Stussy bucket hat, this is certainly an outfit that will not only have you dripping in style points but no doubt bag you top spot when it comes to who can carry the most whether’s originals.

Smart Shorts

Chino Shorts – Styling Suggestion:

Whilst we’re not suggesting you rock up to your nearest 5-star establishment in your favourite pair of gym shorts, there’s no reason the right pair of shorts can’t be dressed up to suit more formal occasions. The king of smart casual diplomacy, the chino shorts exude a more considered approach to dressing without sacrificing on that all-important breeze to the lower leg. For this we’d suggest this rather nice entry from non-other than Ralph Lauren. Made from a gabardine cotton construction and presenting the iconic pony logo to the thigh, an elasticated waistband brings a covert but relaxed finish. Continuing the preppy aesthetic, the Coraux Marine loafers from Paraboot can be found below whilst a Norse Projects Jorn Half-Zip polo sits above.

Swim Shorts

Swim Shorts – Styling Suggestion:

Not only do these Stussy swim shorts possess the amphibious qualities necessary for entering your nearest body of water, but they’re also rather attuned when it comes to piecing together casual looks. Presented in a blinding yellow colourway and purposely cut looser through the leg, the fan favourite script logo adorns sits price of place, whilst an elasticated drawstring waist ensures ample room after indulging on seaside favourites. Teamed with the Novesta Marathon Trails below for all-day comfort an Axel Arigato hoodie above provides the perfect lightweight layer for those chilly summer evenings whilst a Patagonia hip bag provides space for sunglasses, keys and just about any other small personal possession.

Sweat Shorts

Sweat Shorts – Styling Suggestion:

Everyone’s favourite option when it comes to pure comfort, sweat shorts are the true workhorse of any man’s wardrobe. Characterised by their generously cut proportions, super soft cotton construction and space-giving elasticated trims, when it comes to meandering around your local town centre or a day spent indoors they surely take top spot. Embodying all of the above the adidas Essential shorts take the brand’s sportswear influence and channel it into something ultra-relaxed. Combined with the heritage driven SL72 on-feet and a Pyrenex long sleeve, The North Face’s cultural prolific Retro Nuptse Gilet adds extra insulating protection should you need to leave the solace of your sofa.

Jean Shorts

Jean Shorts – Styling Suggestion:

Known for their contributions to the world of stretch denim, for this category it would only be right to highlight the Anbass 573 Bio Shorts from Replay. Fondly known as ‘jorts’, the Anbass take everything we know and love about our favourite pair of denim slacks and upgrades them with a new BBQ friendly length. Made from a new organic blend for a more sustainable finish, the slim-fitting pair come bolstered with a selection of pockets and deep black wash. Fellow purveyors of the eco-friendly cause, above Patagonia’s short sleeve AC shirt is sure to steal some looks inside your local beer garden whilst entries from both Clarks and Belstaff finish the look with some good ol’ British charm.

Outdoor Shorts

Outdoor Shorts – Styling Suggestion:

Rugged, durable and packed with features designed to make more strenuous activities just that little bit easier, if you’re looking for shorts capable of handling the stresses of multiple scenarios look no further than these Gramicci shorts. Given an all-over camo print and equipped with not only a built-in nylon belt but gusset crotch for ease of movement, this interpretation of the brand’s classic climbing shorts come made in a lightweight nylon fabric. Teamed with a Stussy overshirt and coral adidas trefoil t-shirt sure to evoke ice-lolly cravings below the combination of the Nike Canyon Sandals and socks is sure to split some opinions.
