Runaway Fashion: Y-3 Kaiwa

We spent time really considering how the apparel and shoes connect and the message that sends. Always with Y-3, you see the very best of Yohji Yamamoto and the very best of Y-3.

Now into its 15th year of fashion matrimony, the collaboration between sportswear giants adidas and master tailor Yohji Yamamoto has seen a seamless diffusion between functional streetwear and unique design. With the modern-day collection from Y-3 adopting techwear sensibilities, it’s no surprise that their newest collection harnesses the light and tight feel of techwear upon its founder’s monochromatic colour palette.

The new season saw deconstructed aesthetic dialled to the max and that theme sits perfectly on the debuting Kaiwa silhouette. The chunky runner still shows a streamlined sensibility with its Orca like qualities, a clean and uncomplicated design that spices it up with contrasting detailing and a mixed material of neoprene and black leather. With its midsole protrusions to the block white foam sole unit, this silhouette has been quoted by Vogue as taking design cues from French artist César’s Expansion with it’s bulbous and seemingly unpredictable shapes, or as we noted similar to fragments of bone, especially in their contrasting white as ever displaying Yohji’s intrinsically avant-garde ideas even on an athletically designed model such as the Kaiwa.

Sometimes accidents happen when outfit and sneaker not mix; but in this accident can find a new sensitivity, a new balance. It’s a gift and we’re enjoying that gift.

With this initial drop and an inverse colourway presented on the runway, you can guarantee this isn’t the only run out for this bold new offering from the collaboration.

Best of Summer Sneaker Releases at Aphrodite1994

The sneaker game has changed, weekly releases from every brand have forced sneakerheads to check daily for the next cop. There are always special drops you might have missed so don’t worry, we’re recounting our favourite releases of the summer!
adidas Sobakov – White / Gum /// Black / Gum
Following up adidas’ recent readoption of the terrace look, the Sobakov take the Gazelle and Samba stylings of the casual heyday and places them on to a highly desirable asymmetrical silhouette. The football pedigree is on full display with its 3 stripe design lifted straight from the recently reissued Predator Precision series. The similarities to the recently release Kamanda are rife, but the Sobakov holds it’s own as highly desirable design.

Celebrating two nations dear to the Raf Simmons heart finds the ostentatious Ozweego adorned in the USA Red, White and Blue and Belgian Black, Yellow and Red respectively all in the aid of independence and national identity. With both releases coinciding with each nation’s independence day, using the audacious silhouette of the Ozweego as a conduit to individuality and identity, a theme that rang true with each nation’s respective revolutionary movement. Raf, as ever, manages to feature all of this in the luxurious Ozweego design

Y-3 Harigane Sneakers, Kusari & Saikou
A collaboration that predates Off White X Nike in hype and design, the Y-3 collection from master tailor Yohji Yamamoto and adidas hits its 15th anniversary, and there are no signs of let up especially with the footwear choices on offer. With the minimal offerings of the Kursari in monochromatic (and token Yohji) White & Black, alongside the returning Saikou silhouette, all featuring subtle additions of boost technology. The highlight of the drop is the Harigane trail sneaker, championing deconstruction and offering a unique redesign of the adidas NMD with its segmented sole unit.

Nike Air Max 98 & 270
A newly created and newly reissued double bill of Air Max from Nike in the form of the Air Max 270 and Air Max 98. Both championing revolutionary air units; it’s the first edition of each colourway for the respective silhouettes. The 270 lands in an eye-catching and intrinsic triple black Air Max 270 colourway, complementing the audacious air unit with a subtle colouring. On the other spectrum, the total crimson makeover of the Air Max 98 is a spectacular rendition of the vibrant and chunky Air Max styling. Two distinct looks but equally irresistible.

Y-3 Saikou | Black/White & White/Black | Available 26th January 2018

The Spring/Summer drops from Y-3 keep gathering momentum. Following from last week’s phenomenal Kusari sneaker release, the collaborative imprint presents a second Boost-equipped silhouette in the Saikou.

Like its predecessor, the Saikou features running-inspired tooling with a custom Boost midsole as the centrepiece, providing that now-familiar blend of comfort and energy-returning bounce in a streamlined package. What sets the Saikou apart is its unique two-layer Primeknit upper, which both aids comfort and flexibility as well as adding a dimensional texture to the otherwise minimal lines.

The sides of the silhouette boast knit ‘windows’ that expose the lace-loop cables for a deconstructed look, while the vamp sports this season’s branding concept, which includes heritage adidas slogans alongside the classic Y-3 logo and Yohji Yamamoto’s signature. The finishing touch is applied to the tongue, with the iconic 3 Stripes making an appearance knit into the fabric itself. The whole package adds up to yet another future classic from a particularly strong season by the brand.

Get a closer look at the sneaker with our on-foot video below.

The Y-3 Saikou in both Black/White and White/Black colourways is releasing on Friday 26th of January from Aphrodite Clothing.

Y-3 Kusari | Black/White & Chilli Pepper | Releasing 19th of January

Having kicked off their Spring/Summer 2018 collection with the slip-on Suberou and updated classic Super Knot, now Y-3 debut the next player in their all-new footwear lineup: the Kusari.

A thoroughly modern sneaker in aesthetics, the Kusari hits all the right notes with its well-proportioned lines, technical bootie-fit upper and neoprene accents, while adorning the shoe with artisanal touches like the contrasting rope lace loops, floating leather heel counter and alternating suede and leather overlays to the uppers.

The Kusari also marks the first time the imprint has utilised a custom-tooled Boost sole unit, having previously opted to use existing adidas moulds for their Boost-equipped models. The result is subtly more cohesive with the rest of the shoe, allowing the designers’ vision to shine through uncompromised for something truly unique.

With everything else that’s going on with the silhouette, the designers have wisely opted to keep the branding relatively simple, with the tongue proclaiming the brand in a slightly raised contrasting print. Coming in both muted black & white and the bold seasonal ‘Chilli Pepper’ red colourways, the Kusari is yet another winner from adidas and Yohji Yamamoto.

The Y-3 Kusari sneaker in Black/White & Chilli Pepper will be releasing on Friday 19th of January.

Y3 SS18: Footwear Preview

It’s coming up to the 15th anniversary of the first collection by Y3, and designer Yohji Yamamoto is looking to the label’s roots as an inspirational foundation for the upcoming Spring/Summer ’18 season. Based around the key phrase ‘Uniform of the Street since 2003’, Yamamoto and his cohorts are keen to remind us that fashion’s current ongoing obsession with technical sportswear has been their forte for a decade and a half, and this confidence in their expertise particularly shines through in the new season footwear collection, which consists of all new styles and never before seen reworkings of adidas classics.

The first drop arrives next month and kicks off with a brand new silhouette, the Suberou; an evolution of the bestselling Qasa sneaker from previous seasons, the Suberou is a slim, slip-on style with a sock-like neoprene upper sat atop an all-new Y3 runner sole unit. The uppers feature mesh underlays for extra breathability, and sport bold printed branding throughout the tongue area, echoing the apparel collection’s graphic-heavy aesthetic. Delivered in the brand’s usual stealthy all-black colourway, as well as this season’s featured colours of Unity Ink and Chilli Pepper for a bold hit of colour.

Y3 have long offered their interpretation of the iconic adidas Superstar silhouette in the form of the Super Zip. This season they are offering a more deconstructed take on the classic with the Super Knot. Using the familiar shell-toed court design of the original as a starting point, Y3 add some typical idiosyncratic flair in the form of a unique drawcord lacing system that runs the length of the shoe, allowing for a fully customisable fit. The premium leather uppers sport simplified branding, eschewing the classic 3 Stripes for a simple gold-stamped Superstar callout, while the tongue sports the season’s signature bold graphic approach.

Finally, in preparation for the summer months — or those weekends away — Y3 drop their own edition of the ever-popular Adilette slide. Utilising premium materials and the brand’s signature branding, they’ll keep you looking fresh whether on the streets or relaxing by the pool.

The first drop of Y3 SS18 footwear is due to arrive soon right here at Aphrodite Clothing, with further releases to follow. Keep an eye on our blog or our social media feeds for more information as it becomes available.

Y3 Kozoko High SneakersLike many of their recent styles, the Kozoko High boasts an eclectic and highly textural mix of materials to the uppers, with tough ballistic nylon, smooth nubuck and premium grain leather all featuring, while welded overlays provide additional structure and support in key areas. The collar and tongue design is unique, wrapping around the ankle for support while staying flexible with an elasticated, gusseted tongue.

Y3 Kozoko High Sneakers BlackOf course the main event for any sneakerhead is the full length Boost sole unit, which also comes fully blacked out to maintain the overall dark look, while still providing its supreme comfort levels and energy response. Branding is kept low-key with tonal prints to the heel and toe, while the famous 3 Stripes motif only appears to the inside collar for a subtle finish.
