A Five Star Sequel: Y-3 Kusari II

It’s rare a sequel eclipses the original, but sometimes the formula is just rejigged enough to create a better, unique experience than before. The Godfather 2, The Dark Knit, Toy Story 2, all setting the bar higher just like Y-3’s rapid-fire sequel.

This season of Y-3 has been a rapid-fire display of new styles from Yohji Yamamoto and co, showcasing a juxtaposition of designs from the slimline to the bulbous. Following up the initial Kusari release just 7 months ago, we have the sequel to their ultra modernist design in form of the Kursari II.

One of only a handful of Y-3 models to utilise a full length boost sole unit, the eye-catching lines of shoe truly provide one of the most unique silhouettes in Y-3 history.

With a material mix of rubber, leather, suede, patent leather, neoprene and repurposed shoelaces and stitched elasticated eyelets the shoe is an experience in footwear tailoring. Harnassing an all in one neoprene upper, the shoe follows similar design cues to the recently released Kaiwa in it’s unusually stitched toe box. The eyelets are held in place with a heavily stitched in elasticated rope, adding a contemporary spin intrinsic with the current Y-3 design ethos.

The suede heel rap offers a tonal and textual variation with a supple trim that mixes with a red patent leather heel piece and a leather stitched strap that is vaguely reminiscent to a certain rival’s 90’s runner (rhymes with apache). Re-purposed red laces make up the upper eye stays and heel tab, matching tonally with the stitched tongue branding and heel piece.

The sole is made up of a 3 piece bonded unit, starting with a rubber midsole and sole sandwiching a boost sole unit to maximize comfort over performance.

With the overall theme of luxury permeating through on this Y-3 release, don’t miss out on a premium sequel.

Running on Thin Air – Y3 Adizero Runner

The intersection of sports and high fashion is surely at a precipice and for one of the original master tailors and his collaboration alongside the brand with the 3-stripes the question is did they influence this movement of sporting fashion over their 15+ years of work, or has the Y-3 brand found themselves at this point as a sign of low key consistency?

We’re tending towards the former as the brand continues to offer the subtle and the audacious in their creations via adidas with eye-catching and revolutionary design pieces that utilise the best of the German brand’s forward-thinking technology.

After two ostentatious designs this season in the form of the Harigane & Kaiwa, Yohji and co have toned the bulbous aesthetic for a subtler athletic design in the form of the Adizero Runner, adapting their inline boost running designs into an ultra chic breathable silhouette that commands attention for its performance.

The design cues of the lightweight design are a whats what of the adidas running world. From sole up, we have the heralded adidas torsion system, an outsole component that has been a mainstay in performance models since its introduction in 1988, linking two rubberised sole units at the toe and heel for ultimate movement. From there we are reintroduced to the revolutionary boost technology, adding a thin strip to the sole for a minimal yet responsive action for all kinds of running. The midsole incorporates a rigid foam that bonds the midsole to the upper, in keeping with the materialisation of Y-3’s current season.

The upper is where the materialisation takes the precedent, fusing ultra-breathable mesh with a neoprene and suede accent to the rear of the shoe. Where traditional shoe uppers would incorporate additionally stitched panelling, the Adizero Runner places angular embroidered toe box panelling with a contrasting stitch to the inner lateral side. The eye stay is also attached in a minimal fashion, being stitched to the traditional tongue area in a similar pattern to the panelling. Finalising this luxuriously downplayed upper is a stitched Y-3 tab to the tongue with embroidered long form Yohji Yamamoto signature and circular logo.

With the performance capabilities of this brand new release of 2 on display, you might have to think about using these on the next 5k.

Y-3 New Arrivals

A new season of Y-3 has seen Yohji Yamamoto, the master tailor himself, takes on his biggest involvement in the designs of the season since some of the early years of its inception just in time to coincide with the collaboration’s 15th anniversary.

The highlight of this season has come in the form of The brand new Kiawa, a unique silhouette that channels a variety of inspiration.

The chunky runner still shows a streamlined sensibility with its Orca like qualities, a clean and uncomplicated design that spices it up with contrasting detailing and a mixed material of neoprene and black leather. With its midsole protrusions to the block white foam sole unit, this silhouette has been quoted by Vogue as taking design cues from French artist César’s Expansion

Generating hype since it’s first introduction on the catwalk, the Kiawa looks set to cause a further buzz with the addition of more colourways to join this already heralded initial offering.

Following a similarly deconstructed path and channelling the aesthetics of an adidas staple is the Y-3 Haringane. Brought in to the Y-3 arsenal earlier this year, the NMD-esque racer employs exposed features such as floating eyelets, coloured and segmented sole blocks and a Cable 3 Stripes with rubber accents rope style exoskeleton.

The trail running sneaker is having a bit of a fashion moment recently – alongside the wider trends of normcore, dadcore, whatever you want to call it – as a reclaimed symbol of utility and practicality over style, given new life by the cutting-edge trendsetters of fashion weeks the world over. Given this current climate, the brand new Harigane sneaker from Y3 makes perfect sense: unapologetic in its technical origins, Y3 adopt an ‘inside-out’ approach, putting the sneaker’s inner workings on display for all to see.

With the sneakers taking the limelight with their ostentatious designs, it’s worth the reminder that the Y-3 collection is an all-encompassing package with their apparel boasting equally audacious design aesthetics.

This season’s statement Y-3 Hoodie has offered design cues inspired by techwear as well as initial collections from Y-3. It’s the use of heritage and familiar design features that gives Y-3 the tantalising designs that grab the attention from the get-go.

Boasting a plethora of repurposed vintage detailing, this hoodie comes in a substantial loopback terry fabric and features ribbed panels to the sleeves, hood and pocket. Also featuring overlock stitching throughout, the hoodie is finished with the brand’s signature stacked branding to the back in a mixture of print and stitching.

If it’s pure athleisure you require, Y-3 has got everything through to the basics covered. Look no further than their selection of Y3 3 Stripe Long Sleeve, Y3 Adilette Slide, Y3 Shorts and Y3 Tube Socks

It’s a perfect palette for the fashionable athlete or any fan of their expensive leisure wear.

Alongside the above is an extensive collection of new footwear models as well as the ever-growing base palette of black clothing that the collaboration has been known for. Keep your eyes peeled for more drops from the season and a high profile release or two.

Runaway Fashion: Y-3 Kaiwa

We spent time really considering how the apparel and shoes connect and the message that sends. Always with Y-3, you see the very best of Yohji Yamamoto and the very best of Y-3.

Now into its 15th year of fashion matrimony, the collaboration between sportswear giants adidas and master tailor Yohji Yamamoto has seen a seamless diffusion between functional streetwear and unique design. With the modern-day collection from Y-3 adopting techwear sensibilities, it’s no surprise that their newest collection harnesses the light and tight feel of techwear upon its founder’s monochromatic colour palette.

The new season saw deconstructed aesthetic dialled to the max and that theme sits perfectly on the debuting Kaiwa silhouette. The chunky runner still shows a streamlined sensibility with its Orca like qualities, a clean and uncomplicated design that spices it up with contrasting detailing and a mixed material of neoprene and black leather. With its midsole protrusions to the block white foam sole unit, this silhouette has been quoted by Vogue as taking design cues from French artist César’s Expansion with it’s bulbous and seemingly unpredictable shapes, or as we noted similar to fragments of bone, especially in their contrasting white as ever displaying Yohji’s intrinsically avant-garde ideas even on an athletically designed model such as the Kaiwa.

Sometimes accidents happen when outfit and sneaker not mix; but in this accident can find a new sensitivity, a new balance. It’s a gift and we’re enjoying that gift.

With this initial drop and an inverse colourway presented on the runway, you can guarantee this isn’t the only run out for this bold new offering from the collaboration.

Y3 Take on the Trail Runner with the Harigane Sneaker

The trail running sneaker is having a bit of a fashion moment recently – alongside the wider trends of normcore, dadcore, whatever you want to call it – as a reclaimed symbol of utility and practicality over style, given new life by the cutting-edge trendsetters of fashion weeks the world over. Given this current climate, the brand new Harigane sneaker from Y3 makes perfect sense: unapologetic in its technical origins, Y3 adopt an ‘inside-out’ approach, putting the sneaker’s inner workings on display for all to see.

Starting with the now-expected lightweight Primeknit upper as a base, the Harigane – Japanese for ‘wires’ – lives up to its name by exposing the cable-based lacing system at the sides, utilising a floating lace-stay whilst also cleverly incorporating the signature 3 Stripes into the deconstructed look.

The sole unit continues this theme, with multi-layered foam strata of variable density showing exactly how the cushioning works, while the outsole adopts the customary sawtooth tread of traditional trail running sneakers, all adding up to an aggressive look. But it’s not all technical and utilitarian; premium grain leather accents add a touch of luxury, while the Poron-cushioned leather insole ensures all-day comfort.

If you’re looking to add something a little different to your sneaker rotation, Y3 have come through once again with a stellar option.

The Y3 Harigane sneaker in both Black / Red and White / Black colourways is available in-store and online now at Aphrodite Clothing.

Y-3 Saikou | Black/White & White/Black | Available 26th January 2018

The Spring/Summer drops from Y-3 keep gathering momentum. Following from last week’s phenomenal Kusari sneaker release, the collaborative imprint presents a second Boost-equipped silhouette in the Saikou.

Like its predecessor, the Saikou features running-inspired tooling with a custom Boost midsole as the centrepiece, providing that now-familiar blend of comfort and energy-returning bounce in a streamlined package. What sets the Saikou apart is its unique two-layer Primeknit upper, which both aids comfort and flexibility as well as adding a dimensional texture to the otherwise minimal lines.

The sides of the silhouette boast knit ‘windows’ that expose the lace-loop cables for a deconstructed look, while the vamp sports this season’s branding concept, which includes heritage adidas slogans alongside the classic Y-3 logo and Yohji Yamamoto’s signature. The finishing touch is applied to the tongue, with the iconic 3 Stripes making an appearance knit into the fabric itself. The whole package adds up to yet another future classic from a particularly strong season by the brand.

Get a closer look at the sneaker with our on-foot video below.

The Y-3 Saikou in both Black/White and White/Black colourways is releasing on Friday 26th of January from Aphrodite Clothing.

Y-3 Kusari | Black/White & Chilli Pepper | Releasing 19th of January

Having kicked off their Spring/Summer 2018 collection with the slip-on Suberou and updated classic Super Knot, now Y-3 debut the next player in their all-new footwear lineup: the Kusari.

A thoroughly modern sneaker in aesthetics, the Kusari hits all the right notes with its well-proportioned lines, technical bootie-fit upper and neoprene accents, while adorning the shoe with artisanal touches like the contrasting rope lace loops, floating leather heel counter and alternating suede and leather overlays to the uppers.

The Kusari also marks the first time the imprint has utilised a custom-tooled Boost sole unit, having previously opted to use existing adidas moulds for their Boost-equipped models. The result is subtly more cohesive with the rest of the shoe, allowing the designers’ vision to shine through uncompromised for something truly unique.

With everything else that’s going on with the silhouette, the designers have wisely opted to keep the branding relatively simple, with the tongue proclaiming the brand in a slightly raised contrasting print. Coming in both muted black & white and the bold seasonal ‘Chilli Pepper’ red colourways, the Kusari is yet another winner from adidas and Yohji Yamamoto.

The Y-3 Kusari sneaker in Black/White & Chilli Pepper will be releasing on Friday 19th of January.

Y3 SS18: Footwear Preview

It’s coming up to the 15th anniversary of the first collection by Y3, and designer Yohji Yamamoto is looking to the label’s roots as an inspirational foundation for the upcoming Spring/Summer ’18 season. Based around the key phrase ‘Uniform of the Street since 2003’, Yamamoto and his cohorts are keen to remind us that fashion’s current ongoing obsession with technical sportswear has been their forte for a decade and a half, and this confidence in their expertise particularly shines through in the new season footwear collection, which consists of all new styles and never before seen reworkings of adidas classics.

The first drop arrives next month and kicks off with a brand new silhouette, the Suberou; an evolution of the bestselling Qasa sneaker from previous seasons, the Suberou is a slim, slip-on style with a sock-like neoprene upper sat atop an all-new Y3 runner sole unit. The uppers feature mesh underlays for extra breathability, and sport bold printed branding throughout the tongue area, echoing the apparel collection’s graphic-heavy aesthetic. Delivered in the brand’s usual stealthy all-black colourway, as well as this season’s featured colours of Unity Ink and Chilli Pepper for a bold hit of colour.

Y3 have long offered their interpretation of the iconic adidas Superstar silhouette in the form of the Super Zip. This season they are offering a more deconstructed take on the classic with the Super Knot. Using the familiar shell-toed court design of the original as a starting point, Y3 add some typical idiosyncratic flair in the form of a unique drawcord lacing system that runs the length of the shoe, allowing for a fully customisable fit. The premium leather uppers sport simplified branding, eschewing the classic 3 Stripes for a simple gold-stamped Superstar callout, while the tongue sports the season’s signature bold graphic approach.

Finally, in preparation for the summer months — or those weekends away — Y3 drop their own edition of the ever-popular Adilette slide. Utilising premium materials and the brand’s signature branding, they’ll keep you looking fresh whether on the streets or relaxing by the pool.

The first drop of Y3 SS18 footwear is due to arrive soon right here at Aphrodite Clothing, with further releases to follow. Keep an eye on our blog or our social media feeds for more information as it becomes available.
