The Adidas State Series Illinois pays homage to the state’s iconic Prairie fields…Adidas State Series Illinois Trainers

Inspired by the European City Series that brought us trainers such as the Hamburg, the State Series is an American counterpart for our friends over in the USA. Having previously covered states such as Alaska and Nevada, the brand with the three stripes have turned their attention towards Illinois with a concept inspired by the state’s abundant fields of Prairie.

The trainer is dressed in an ambient sky blue suede upper, with wheat coloured leather detailing making up the shoe’s lining, heel tab and of course… three stripes. To the tongue a graphic displays adidas ‘Prairie’ lettering with iconography of wheat proudly centred. Underfoot, a gum rubber sole is added to elevate the trainers style, furthering its classic, timeless look, whilst also hiding a secret graphic that has been added as a subtle nod to Route 66.

New Balance 9060 Size Guide – How Do They Fit?

New Balance have quickly solidified themselves as the go-to trainer brand this year. With numerous hyped collabs and colourways selling out almost immediately, the Boston-based brand have proven that they’re a force to be reckoned with in the footwear industry. Dropping a number of hyped models that fly off the shelves, New Balance have seen a massive haul of success in the form of 550’s, 2002R’s and 990’s. But, for Summer 2022, the brand turned its attention toward the long-awaited New Balance 9060 silhouette, which has been a hit ever since.

New Balance 9060 Trainers in Brown

The New Balance 9060 silhouette was successfully released in collaboration with Joe FreshGoods in the summer of 2022 and its general release has been one we’ve been keeping our eye out for. Taking inspiration from both the brand’s 99x series and 860v2 trainers, the model offers a mashup that can only be described as a ‘modern dad trainer’. On the upper of the shoe, breathable mesh panels are encapsulated by suede and leather overlays. The external side of the shoe sees 3M reflective ‘N’ New Balance branding whereas the internal side sees the reflective branding be replaced with dotted embroidery in the shape of an ‘N’. In typical New Balance fashion, comfort is key and that’s exactly why the brand opts for an ABZORB midsole to reduce impact and create an easy-wearing, everyday shoe. The chunky outsole also provides further comfort whilst adding to the unique aesthetic.

How do you style the New Balance 9060’s?

The New Balance 9060 flaunts modern dad trainer aesthetic, they’re ideal to pair with any jeans, or joggers and they look great with some casual suit pants for a more dressed-up look.

Are the New Balance 9060’s comfortable?

The use of New Balance’s ABZORB technology and the large, chunky outsole means that almost every impact is softened, the shoes are ideal for everyday wear and offer a reliably comfortable feel.

How do I care for my New Balance 9060’s?

The New Balance 9060’s are made using a variety of overlaying materials, this typically means that they are harder to clean. Simply grab some Jason Mark Cleaning solution and a shoe care brush and give them a good scrub over, problem solved!

Adidas Gazelle 85 Trainers in Blue

The History Of The Adidas Gazelle Trainers

Every now and then it’s nice to take a step back, take a deep breath and just appreciate how far things have come. Whether that be the leaps and bounds we’ve made in technology,  immense feats of human ability or just a really good pair of trainers. Since we’ve yet to break any world records or develop the next advancement in modern computing we opted to stick to footwear, taking a deep dive into a sneaker that’s left a footprint on many of our hearts, the adidas Gazelle.

Adidas Gazelle 85 Trainers in Blue

A Brief History of the adidas Gazelle

Launched onto the scene in 1968 the adidas Gazelle paved the way for the modern day, 21st-century perception of adidas being the first to pioneer the suede and accompanying three-striped contrast design. Not only did this new material choice offer a much lighter alternative to the more commonplace leather but, it lent itself perfectly to the dying process making it capable of producing a spectrum of bright colours, first of which was the OG blue and red variations.

Despite the latter being adopted by the world of handball, there is actually a fair amount of mystery and intrigue surrounding the Gazelle’s true purpose. Was it an indoor football shoe? running sneaker? handball trainer? No one truly knows, but what we do know is that the adidas Gazelle presented enough technical know-how and clever complexities to jump from sport to sport earning itself the title of an all-around athletic training shoe, with an understated, clean and streamlined wedge shape design that set a precedent for low-top performance footwear.

The Link Between The Gazelle And Sports

Perhaps the true beauty of the Gazelle story, however, lies within its ability to break down the barriers that separated fashion and sportswear with its acceptance into the quintessential uniform for a variety of subcultures and styles. Its first taste of such comradery was when it found itself quickly rising to prominence with football fans and the casual audience, sitting nicely amongst the adidas three stripe terrace offering which included other such greats as the Munchen and Forest Hills.

From aways days to locals, rain or shine, cider or lager the Gazelle was on foot for it all becoming a status symbol amongst brands such as Stone island, Fred Perry, and CP Company, forming an unwritten code for admittance into the football stadium. Even to this day over 40 years later, the adidas Gazelle still remains synonymous with the football culture and you’d be hard-pressed to go to a game without spotting a pair of brightly coloured suede trainers pounding the pavement in or around the ground. But, perhaps a true testament to the Gazelles affiliation with the beautiful game was when Daniel Baddiel wore a pair in the Three Lions music video. Case closed.

Getting The Right Tune Out Of The adidas Gazelle

If someone asked you to sum up the adidas Gazelle in a sound what would you say? Well chances are after a brief moment of confusion and a few questioning glances you’d probably go for Oasis, Blur or, no pun intended, Suede. Britpop undeniably played a huge part in the Gazelle success story not only because this was the music that serenaded the ears of the Gazelle clad masses but, the people who were strumming the guitars and banging the drums were wearing the trainers themselves, taking them from the feet of working-class season ticket holders to those of celebrities and musicians alike.

The Gallaghers, Damon Albarn, Kate Moss and many, many more were all well and truly the face of the adidas Gazelle optimizing the look, attitude and edge that helped the trainer skyrocket from humble sneaker to cult classic. In fact, their association was so entwined with the retro classic that the iconic 1993 shot of Moss in her crimson pair of Gazelles was recently used to launch the 2016 reissue of the ’90s model when the sneaker was arguably at its cultural prowess.

However, it’s not just the footy and learning the chorus to Wonderwall the Gazelle was concerned with as it set out to fulfil its unsatisfiable urge to become best mates with everyone. With the likes of Superstars and the Campus cropping up in America thanks to its affiliation with basketball, the adidas Gazelle became the next best thing for European hip hop culture adopted by amongst others, UK b-boys such as Broken Glass who used the shoe and their US influences to carve a distinct hybrid style.

But that’s not to say the Gazelle didn’t make it stateside. With the help of Run-D.M.C who undeniably opened the adidas floodgates, being the first non-athletes to collaborate with the sportswear brand with the release of a limited edition Superstar, the hip hop spotlight was thrust firmly onto the sportswear brand. Among the masses of diagonal rectangles across the pond the Gazelle reared its head, being considered a connoisseurs choice when it came to footwear with the likes of The Beastie Boys powerless to its plush suede fabrication with Mike D, MCA and Ad-Rock seen donning the trainer in their fight against early bedtimes.

Since its inception, the adidas Gazelle has seen countless iterations, in colour, materials and design each bringing a fresh twist to the table – see for example the Supers below – but staying true to the original winning formula of minimal detailing, quality materials and a smart low silhouette. Throw into the mix its rich history styling the youth tribes of yonder year or its countless celebrity sightings – we haven’t even mentioned Jackon 5 era, Michael Jackson rocking a pair, Bob Marley doing keepy ups in them or their brief stint mastering kickflips – and it’s fair to say no matter what angle you look at it from the Gazelle was and still is an unequivocal cultural powerhouse capable of generation-spanning heritage charm and irresistible universal appeal.

adidas Gazelle Indoor trainers

So, back to the big question. Is it a dancing shoe? A free-kick curling mastermind? Or a species of very fast antelope? We think it’s a bit of a Jack of all trades but contrary to the popular saying the Gazelle has managed to master them all.

Take a look at our adidas Originals Gazelle offerings, or come in store and see us, we’d be more than happy to chat all things three stripes.

Partnered With The Planet : A Q&A With Patagonia

This year Patagonia caught headlines across the world as its founder, and now ex owner, Yvon Chouinard gave his company away in a move that made the Earth Patagonia’s sole shareholder. We caught up with Harry from Patagonia to discuss the company’s history, future, and commitment to saving our home planet.

For those not familiar, how was Patagonia founded and how has the brand evolved over the years?

Over the last 50 years Patagonia has sought to challenge the accepted model of capitalism by demonstrating that doing the right thing for people and planet makes for good and profitable business. Yvon Chouinard’s first Patagonia products were pieces of climbing equipment called pitons crafted by himself on his second-hand anvil and then sold out of the boot of his car whilst traveling around the USA climbing. From these initial products Patagonia steadily evolved to produce outdoor clothing and equipment following Yvon’s strict design philosophy of simplicity and responsibility. Today Patagonia’s commitment to our home planet holds strong, as we seek to pioneer solutions to the footprint of the apparel industry, and advocate for the role of business in holding governments to account in this time of environmental crisis.

How important to Patagonia is being sustainable and how does that shape the brand’s approach to producing outdoor clothing?

The reality is that nothing is sustainable, and Patagonia is not a sustainable company. Everything we make has an impact. The apparel industry alone is responsible for 10% of all global emissions whilst garment worker abuse is rife. At Patagonia we do not use the term sustainable, but instead see addressing our footprint as a responsibility. By operating as a responsible business, we can demonstrate that it’s possible to put people and planet first in an economy centred around extractive capitalism.

What are some of the key initiatives that Patagonia has in place to address its responsibility to people and planet?

100% of Profits go toward fighting the Climate Crisis

In September 2022, Yvon gave up his and his family’s ownership of Patagonia. In doing so, Yvon created a structure in which Patagonia’s commitment to how we do business is locked in for perpetuity, whilst also committing 100% of profits to fighting the ecological and environmental crisis. These profits are paid to the Holdfast Collective whose purpose is to use every pound received to fight the environmental crisis, protect nature and biodiversity and to support thriving communities. The collective intends to give around $100 million a year to ensuring that we save our home planet.

Preferred Materials

In Fall 2022 99.5% of Patagonia’s range will feature preferred materials. Preferred materials are those which have a reduced impact on the planet compared to their conventional alternatives. Examples of Patagonia’s preferred materials include; Regenerative Organic Cotton, Organic Cotton, Recycled Polyester, Recycled Nylon, Recycled Cotton, Recycled Wool, the Responsible Wool Standard, Recycled Down, Advanced Global Traceable Down and yarns derived from ocean plastic using the innovative Bureo Netplus material. The environmental impact of each item in the Patagonia range is considered from the start of the design process – it’s easier to address your impact on the planet by treading lightly in the first instance, rather than when the damage is done. We intend to be using preferred materials across 100% of its lines by 2025.

Fair Trade Certification

As of Spring 2022, 80% of Patagonia’s range is Fair Trade Certified Sewn ensuring that the workers who made their clothing receive a premium for their labour. Through this third-party certification, factory workers are guaranteed safe working practices, fair pay, and empowered to use the Fair Trade premium they receive to create a benefit for their community. This premium is controlled by the workers and spent democratically on initiatives such as childcare, worker education, or can simply be paid as a bonus.

Patagonia has spent decades building relationships with the factories who are part of their Fair Trade initiatives, and by collaborating with workers and owners have established a Fair Trade pathway that other businesses can join when making their products in these factories. The intention is that by 2025 Patagonia will be able to deliver a range that is 100% Fair Trade Certified Sewn.

1% for the Planet

Since 1985, Patagonia has given $160m to environmental grassroots activists working on solutions to the climate crisis through its commitment to 1% for the Planet. Founded by Yvon Chouinard and Craig Matthews, 1% for the Planet is an organization to which businesses and individuals can pledge to commit at least 1% of their annual turnover to environmental activism. This in turn builds an alliance of businesses who understand that the profit and loss mindset of our current model of capitalism is not concerned about the impact it has upon our home planet’s health. Presently only 3% of all global philanthropic giving goes towards environmental action. If you’re a business owner, have influence within a business, or an individual who gives a damn then you can find out more about 1% for the Planet here.

Iron Clad Guarantee

At Patagonia we guarantee everything we make under the Iron Clad Guarantee. If you are not satisfied with one of Patagonia’s products at the time you receive it, or if the product does not perform to your satisfaction, return it to the store you bought if from or to Patagonia for repair, replacement or refund.

Worn Wear

The most environmentally responsible item of clothing is the one you already own, so if it’s broke, fix it! Whilst Patagonia offers repairs on all its own product, we’re aware that very few other apparel manufacturers feel an obligation to be a part of their products’ lifecycle once it leaves their stores. Worn Wear was established as a Patagonia initiative to keep gear in play for longer by hosting events where trained repair specialists fix clothing and gear from any manufacturer for free. Why extend the life of gear? Because the best thing we can do for the planet is to cut down on consumption and get use out of the stuff we already own. Keeping your gear in play for another 9 months reduces its carbon, water and waste related footprint by 30%. You don’t have to wait for Worn Wear to roll into town though, you can find handy how to guides for simple fixes online.

How do you balance the need for performance in functional outdoor clothing, and your commitment to reducing your footprint?

One of the first products Yvon made was a piece of climbing equipment called the piton. A piton is a piece of forged steel that is hammered into a crack in the rock whilst climbing which, once a rope has been clipped to it, protects the climber. Whilst pitons were effective, their extensive use in the early days of climbing was damaging the rock and creating environmental harm to natural playgrounds. Recognising this harm, Yvon overnight both stopped producing the piton and discontinued his most lucrative product. The piton was then replaced with the nut, which instead of being harmfully hammered into rock could be respectfully placed and easily retrieved by hand – thereby leaving no trace whilst offering no compromise on performance. It is with that philosophy that Patagonia continues to approach product design. Responsibly produced product does not need to compromise on performance, but instead requires that we reconsider the method by which we attain that performance standard.

A modern example of this can be found among your assortment at Aphrodite with the Downdrift Jacket. It’s a retro inspired, city jacket designed to be functional for day-to-day life and weather. That’s apparent from the moment you put it on. What isn’t is the way the jacket is made. The face fabric of the jacket is made using 100% recycled fishing nets, reclaimed through Patagonia’s partner Bureo, and woven into a polyester fabric which removes our reliance on fossil fuel-based virgin plastic. Inside the jacket is 700 fill power Recycled Down saved from landfill, and all this warmth is stitched together by a garment worker in a Fair Trade Certified factory. Whilst there’s always ways to improve the Downdrift’s footprint, we’re proud of what we’ve developed and confidently cover it under our Iron Clad Guarantee.

Patagonia’s mission statement changed in 2018 to ‘We’re in business to save our home planet’. What does this mean, and what is Patagonia doing beyond addressing its product footprint?

Patagonia commitment to saving our home planet certainly did not start in 2018 with the change in mission statement. Whilst Yvon was discontinuing the harmful piton in 1972, Patagonia was beginning its journey in supporting grassroots environmental activism. This first came with the offering of a phone and a desk at the Patagonia offices for Friends of the Ventura River. This was a local environmental campaign looking to stop the construction of a dam which would have been catastrophic for local ecology. From this initial support came a more formalised commitment in 1985 to give 1% of all turnover to intersectional grassroots environmental organisations working to find solutions to the climate crisis. By working closely with grassroots organisations on the ground, and using our business voice Patagonia has been able to amplify successful campaigns such as the creation of the Vjosa National Park and the opposition to the Pitztal Otztal ski resort expansion. You too can connect with grassroots environmental groups and take action beside them through Patagonia Action Works.

As Patagonia exists within the systems of extractive capitalism, it has a voice that is heard by other businesses and governments. This voice has been exercised across the globe from suing the Trump administration for selling off public lands, to advocating that citizens exercise their democratic right to vote, and in the UK opposing the Police and Crime Bill 2021, which sought to remove many hard-won civil liberties. Patagonia is a proud member of the B Corp community, who seek to put people and planet over profits whilst sharing best practices to enable other businesses to follow suite. Leaving the development of environmentally responsible practices such as Regenerative Organic Cotton production open source enables other businesses to follow the model of business unusual demonstrated by Patagonia.

Our recent announcement of making Earth our only shareholder should not have come as a surprise to anyone paying attention.

Patagonia famously advertised on Black Friday 2011 ‘Don’t Buy this Jacket’. How important is longevity to you as a brand?

There’s no business on a dead planet. Yvon has always encouraged experimentation at Patagonia and the Black Friday advert of 2011 was an example of Patagonia’s disruptive, reimagining of extractive capitalism. That said it’s very easy to reflect on past successes and the reality is that if we have any hope of a thriving planet – much less a thriving business – it’s going to take all of us doing what we can with the resources we have. It’s been nearly 50 years since we began our experiment in responsible business. We’re just getting started.

Big thanks for Harry for taking the time to answer our questions. If you want to checkout the brands latest collection you can find it on our Patagonia page.

New Balance 991 Trainers in Castlerock Grey

New Balance readies the 991 in ‘Castlerock’

Launching at Aphrodite on the 20th of October…

One of the most iconic silhouettes of all time, the New Balance 991 Trainer offers a truly timeless silhouette and unparalleled styling versatility. While the shoe has worn thousands of colours over the years, it truly rocks Grey quite like no other, and the new Castlerock colourway is exemplary of that.

New Balance 991 Trainers in Castlerock Grey

These kicks are made in New Balance’s Flimby factory so you already know that the craftsmanship is going to be spot on. The upper is constructed using a breathable mesh toebox that finds itself being encapsulated by premium suede and nubuck overlays. New Balance branding can be found in the form of a 3M reflective ‘N’ logo, while further branding is embroidered to the tongue of the shoe.

As always the quality upper is placed atop of one of New Balance’s tech filled soles, in this instance they’ve opted for an Abzorb midsole to offer cushioning and compression resistance, basically they’re incredibly comfortable. (I mean, aren’t all New Balance) The two-tone sole is joined to a rubber outsole for added durability and increased traction while translucent windows allow you to peek into the technology housed inside.

Lets run back through… Dad trainer style, check. Grey colourway, check. Super comfortable, check. Versatile, check.
Yeah, I don’t think that New Balance could make a more ‘New Balance’ Trainer if they tried! Dropping on the 20/10/22 you can pick up a pair at Aphrodite where they retail for £209.00

Liam Gallagher x Clarks

Liam Gallagher x Clarks Originals

Launching on the 21st of October at Aphrodite.

Clarks and Liam Gallagher have joined forces to revive the iconic rambler silhouette. Last seen kicking about in the early 2010’s, the Clarks Rambler offers a timeless, ever contemporary style. A style that is synonymous with the one and only Mr Liam G himself.

Liam Gallagher Clarks

The ex-Oasis front man has had a longstanding admiration towards the British brands footwear, and has often been seen proudly rocking silhouettes such as the Desert Trek and the Wallabee throughout the years. So when the lads at Aphrodite got the news of an upcoming collaborative project between the two, it simply made perfect sense, and got us incredibly excited in the process.

And for good reason, the finished project offers a shoe that is exemplary of Clarks’ unparalleled craftsmanship and quality, and is injected with Liam Gallagher’s uniquely distinctive aesthetic.

Liam Gallagher Clarks Rambler

The shoe is made in Portugal, and has had no detail overlooked. With an upper comprised of a supple suede and premium leather detailing, Clarks have opted to deboss Liam Gallagher’s face to the heel, while both Clarks and LG branding appear on the lace tags. Underfoot Clarks’ signature crepe sole offers superlative cushioning and comfort on an ergonomic footbed. The shoes arrive with a separate pair of laces for styling versatility, and are boxed in a special edition LG Rambler shoe-box with co-branding decorating each face.

Liam Gallagher Clarks LG Rambler

Available in extremely limited quantities from a small group of dedicated Clarks retailers, including Aphrodite, the LG Rambler will launch on 21/10/22. Due to an incredible amount of demand, the collab is expected to fly off of the shelves, so act fast to avoid disappointment.

As you were. Aphrodite x
