Designer Jackets: 5 Functional Suggestions For Winter

Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket Blue

We all know the impact of the global recession. Consumers are continually looking for ways to get more for their money and are less likely to make the frivolous purchases that they might have done so in the past. The fashion industry has not escaped the grasp of the economic slowdown and industry brands are fighting each other to get a piece of your hard earned cash. To aide them in their battle, brands tend to offer more than just a jacket that looks good. Functionality and durability are just a couple of factors that come into play as they strive to deliver jackets that you will want to purchase over similar garments.

With the above in mind we thought it would be a good time to bring to you five jackets that are in stock at the moment that are ideal for Winter.  We have specifically chosen jackets that have various features and differing price points.

Woolrich Arctic Parka

1. Woolrich Arctic Parka – £629
The unmistakable Woolrich Arctic Parka is seen by many in the industry as the definitive winter jacket. The Arctic Parka was initially produced for and worn by oil workers in Alaska where temperatures demanded a garment that would keep the workers warm and ultimately safe. This modern day version, based on the original uses the same Ramar fabric that the original was crafted in but has been given a Teflon coating to resist water. The warmth is kept in thanks to a 80% duck down, 20% duck feathers insulation along with a removable coyote fur hood lining. In terms of an all round winter jacket, you will can do a lot worse than try out the Woolrich Arctic Parka.

Moncler Hooded Gilet

2. Moncler Ribay Gilet – £560
If there’s one brand that the celebrities are continually being snapped in over the past year when the weather gets cold, it’s Moncler. In essence, Moncler is a luxurious ski-wear brand that has now been adopted by many of the rich and famous as the must-have label to own in the Winter. Famous names such as Justin Timberlake, Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Jay-Z and Kanye West have all been snapped wearing Moncler jackets.

Rather than pick a full-on down filled jacket such as the Canut or Himalaya, we’ve chosen the stylish Moncler Ribay gilet from their latest collection. Gilet’s are in-demand at the moment and although this one is at the higher end of the price scale, you get a lot for your money. A high quality 90% down, 10% feather insulation is packed away in this diamond quilted design. The removable hood adds to the flexibility of this piece as you can take it off on days when it’s not raining/snowing or maybe when it’s slightly warmer weather.

The gilet becomes a functional addition to your wardrobe as you can wear it in a variety of climates, matched with either a t-shirt or jumper and you can probably wear it more times than a large jacket across the course of the year.

CP Company Goggle Jacket

3. C.P Company Goggle Jacket – £795
The release of any new season CP Company Goggle Jacket perennially induces a frenzy amongst fans of the brand. Often you will find that they will make the sacrifice of paying what in all honesty is a lot of money to most people so they can be the first to be seen wearing the new ‘Mille Miglia’ jacket. This season, C.P Company have outdone themselves with this stunning goggle jacket that we now have available in two colours.

Under the exterior of the outer layer which follows the usual 3 pocket Mille Miglia design, you will find a separate long sleeved down filled inner layer which could be worn as a separate jacket. This inner layer is insulated with an incredible 90% down and 10% feather which is a very high quality ratio that you do not often see. Finished with corozo buttons, goggles to the hood and left arm, this is a piece that will be talked about for years.

Barbour Millom Jacket

4. Barbour Millom Jacket – £250
The huge resurgence in popular culture of recent years that Barbour has seen may seem to have slowed down somewhat to the everyday man that knows them from their quilted jackets. Every brand has to assess the current market though and rather than produce quilted jackets for the masses like in previous years, Barbour are now concentrating on what they have done well for decades; functional heritage outerwear.

Introducing the Barbour Millom jacket, a 6oz Sylkoil waxed piece inspired by technical sailing jackets. Crafted for the modern man in the outdoors, the slim fitting Millom harbours extra details such as fleece lined pockets, stormfly front, elasticated cuffs and Velcro straps combine to aide the jacket’s suitability for the winter. The high button neck and fixed drawstring hood are again features which have been purposefully created to protect you from the elements.

Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket

5. Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket – £100
Getting caught in a downpour if you are not prepared is an awful feeling. It leaves you wet, miserable and wondering why you didn’t buy a coat that was waterproof. The Patagonia Torrentshell jacket is built specifically for those wet weather days when you might get caught in a downpour of torrential rain. Owning a Patagonia Torrentshell jacket means that you are always ready for those conditions.

The jacket folds down into a small neat bundle that can be stored in your car or bag. It is crafted from a lightweight H2No® Performance Standard 2.5-layer nylon material that has been given a Deluge® DWR finish to make it water resistant. A laminated visor on the hood and smaller details such as adjustable cuffs and DWR treated zippers all combine to make this a fantastic wet weather jacket for life in the outdoors.

Patagonia Brand Guide

The Patagonia brand is steeped in history, crafted to conquer the environment, and designed to help save it. Patagonia continues to revolutionise the fashion industry.

History of Patagonia

The man who carried this vision was Yvon Chounaird, who started climbing in America when he was 14. He grew an insatiable passion for the sport, travelling to America to find the best rock faces to climb, and meeting fellow climbers with who he would become best friends along the way.

Chounaird began his first business, making removable fittings called ‘chocks’. He began making them by hand after he bought the tools he needed from a junkyard in California. Word soon spread of his invention and the production of Chounaird’s innovation went industrial, as ‘chocks’ became the norm for a majority of climbers. He then went on to redesign nearly every piece of climbing equipment, bringing them up to date with new lightweight, stronger materials like aluminium.

Chounaird began to travel the world climbing with his friends, moving from the Rockies to the Alps, and even to Scotland. It was here that Chounaird picked up some new climbing clothing- a heavy-duty, overbuilt Rugby top. The colours were striking and new, and a visual break away from the rock climbing clothing at the time which consisted of beige shorts and white shirts. Chounaird soon became inundated with requests for his Rugby shirt and began to ship styles from England, which were made by Umbro. This side of the business, which was much more profitable than making climbing equipment, became Chounaird’s priority. He began shipping clothing from all over the world and sold it under a name he came up with with the help of his climbing friends- Patagonia was chosen due to its ability to be pronounced in every language.

Patagonia soon became a well-recognised label, as Chounaird began to bring innovative fabrics from other lifestyles into climbing. Elements from fishermen’s outfits, such as quick-drying cotton were introduced, as well as insulation through extra internal layering, and waterproof outer layers. The new clothing range was a huge success, but the colour palette of all outdoor clothing was still very bland.

In the early 1980s, Patagonia took a huge risk and introduced clothing with radical colouring. Bright red, cobalt and teal were used to add interest to the collection. The risk paid off, and the influx of colour created a huge fad, helping the Patagonia brand reach out beyond the world of climbing and into the wardrobes of the fashion pack. Patagonia had become a hugely desirable brand, both on the high street and on the cliff face almost overnight.

The success of the brands early days still lives on, and despite its fluctuation into the fashio world, they still create clothing aimed at the outdoor pursuits consumer. Priding itself on an economically friendly approach to production, Patagonia creates clothing for the ‘silent sports’ like fishing, climbing, hiking and skiing. Like the sports that they provide for, there is nothing loud or brash about Patagonia clothing – they are functional, appropriate and ready for any situation.

Patagonia’s Mission

Patagonia’s mission has developed and changed since the brand was first launched. Their goal of producing functional clothing that will serve you well on outdoor adventures and this still continues to be their main mission, however more increasingly how they go about doing this has become almost as important. If producing clothes to explore the environment causes harm to the environment, then it’s not worth making. So the company is producing garments of the best quality causing no unnecessary harm to nature and finally using business to inspire and implement solutions and projects to the environmental crisis.

2022 saw Patagonia in the headlines across the world as its founder, and now ex owner, Yvon Chouinard give his company away in a move that made the Earth Patagonia’s sole shareholder. After this, we had the privilege to catch up with Harry from Patagonia to ask him some questions about the brand and to discuss the company’s history, future, and commitment to saving our home planet. Celebrities Wearing Patagonia

Taking Patagonia onto the high street is not a new fad. Like the colour lovers of the 1980s, celebrities who have enjoyed Patagonia’s qualities have included Reese Witherspoon, Shia LaBeouf and even Will Ferrell. Using Patagonia’s rugged design and functional design stay entwined with any casual look, whilst their outwear provides more than ample protection against some of the worst weather you are likely to encounter, thanks to its rich and diverse climbing experiences.

Patagonia Arrives: A Brief Introduction

Patagonia

An Introduction
There are a number of designer menswear brands that deem themselves to be ‘specialists’ in outerwear when others might contest that statement. Heritage brands such as Barbour are renowned the world over for being leaders in consistently producing top quality outerwear garments which is supported by their Royal Warrants. Without naming any outright, there are a number of brands who seemingly think that by producing a jacket with a mixture of down/feather filling that they also earn the right to the same kind of accolades.

Patagonia are one of the true market leaders in mens functional outerwear but their luxury jackets were seemingly born as a by-product of another industry. Initially the company was created on a small scale that created tools for climbers. Alpinism – often referred to as mountaineering – is still very much in the heart of the Patagonia mission.  Their driving force is to build the best products they can without causing any unnecessary harm to the environment.  Their business has expanded over the years to incorporate many outdoor activities such as skiing, snowboarding, surfing, fishing and running.

Their love for the outdoors is very much at the forefront of the Patagonia ethos with a small percentage of their sales being donated to grassroots environmental groups around the world. Not many brands take their environmental responsibilities as seriously as Patagonia. They realise that a degree of pollution is created from processes such as the dyeing of clothes to producing the lighting in their stores around the world. A steadfast aim to reduce those harmful levels of pollution, as little as they may be, is in action using recycled polyester in a number of their garments rather than cotton that has been treated with pesticides.

Patagonia Jackets

What do Patagonia sell?
As you would expect from such an established specialist in outerwear, Patagonia have harvested a wealth of experience over the years in achieving garments that are functional and look good. Their range of jackets are popular with a diverse range of customers across a growing age range. Materials aren’t chosen just because they look pretty. Some of the recycled lightweight ripstop shells have been treated with Deluge® DWR finishes, giving the jackets water repellent properties which last longer than standard equivalents. Elasticated cuffs and goose down filled quilting are features specifically used to enhance the warmth that you feel when wearing the garments.

Patagonia Torrentshell

Garments such as the Patagonia Torrentshell are engineered specifically for seriously wet weather. Lightweight and again treated with the Deluge® DWR finishes, they will keep your top half dry in the harshest downpours. Easy to pack-away and pull out in an unexpected bout of rain, the Torrentshell has a laminated visor, zipped pockets, treated zips and adjustable Velcro fastening cuffs, all enhancing the waterproof qualities.

Although we predominantly sell jackets from Patagonia’s Autumn Winter 2013 collection, we also have a range of accessories. Soft and colourful bobble hats will keep the heat from escaping from your head in cold climates.  Functional bags including a water repellent backpack and pack-away bag offer something slightly different to other bags we sell at Aphrodite. Aimed at life in the outdoors, each pocket and material used has been created with a purpose in mind.
