Heavy Jackets – The Edit

It doesn’t seem like more than a week ago that we were writing about all things summery: festivals, holidays, sunglasses.  But here we are, with winter fully upon us, bringing with it shorter days, icy winds and all kinds of weather to tackle. Fortunately, whether rain, snow or shine, we’re here to get you kitted out for the season with a well-curated selection of jackets and coats to last you through this winter and well beyond.

North Face Nuptse 1992 Jacket

THE NORTH FACE NUPTSE 1992 JACKET

A truly iconic piece from The North Face’s archives, the Nupste 1992 jacket takes inspiration from the original, while upgrading the fabrics and fit to more modern standards. Crafted from a lightweight nylon shell with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish fashioned into classic large baffles, and generously filled with cosy goose down to combat the cold in style. Various zip pockets keep your essentials safe and secure, while the whole look is finished with the iconic retro Dome logo patch to the left sleeve.

NAPAPIJRI SKIDOO 1 JACKET

Pullover jackets are having a moment right now, and for good reason: they’re perfect for layering for that retro outdoor sportswear look, as well as being designed to keep your core warmer than front-fastening styles. Napapijri’s Skidoo jacket lays claim to be the first ever jacket designed in this way, and is a staple of the brand’s outerwear range. The shell is water-repellent while the body is both lined with fleece and padded with Thermore filling for the ultimate in winter-proof apparel.

PATAGONIA FITZ ROY DOWN PARKA

Designed for serious outdoor use, yet with off-duty good looks, the Fitz Roy parka utilises Pertex Quantum fabrics throughout, which are lightweight, durable and water resistant, as well as letting the 800-fill goose down filling loft properly to maximise its warmth retention. So whether you’re scaling peaks on a weekend or schlepping between home and the pub on a night, this is one jacket that will never let you down in either the style or performance departments.

Of course, the above is just a small selection of our jackets and coats. Find these and many more instore and online at Aphrodite Clothing today.

Patagonia H2No Guide

Patagonia are renowned for creating products that are tested to their limits and made to withstand some of the harshest conditions on Earth. One area in which they excel is waterproofing, they have designed the Patagonia H2No range of products that combine their expert skills at creating fabrics with a stunning level of design.

These Patagonia H2No fabrics are tested in not only the lab but the real world to see whether they are up to standard. The way they test the waterproof nature of the material is to simulate real-life conditions from light rain, to a heavy downpour and finally, forcing water through the face of the fabric itself.

Patagonia H2No

Now it’s all well and good creating something waterproof but it must be durable. This is where the “Killer Wash” comes in, this is Patagonia’s way of putting the fabric through years of use in drenching conditions to see if it’s up to the task. Only once it passes these tests will it get the H2No status.

The H2No products come in three different categories, split into, 2-layer, 2.5 layer and 3 layer. What do they mean? Well here is an overview:

Behind The Brand: Patagonia

Patagonia T-Shirt

Patagonia

Yvon Chouinard founded Patagonia in the late 1950s. As a young climber, Chouinard began to make pitons and sell them for $1.50 each. It wasn’t until the 70s when the clothing started to be manufactured, and Patagonia was born to serve those in the climbing world. In the 60s it was unheard of for men to wear colourful clothing outside. Outerwear consisted of basic grey sweatshirts and pants, that was until Chouinard bought a regulation rugby team shirt back from Scotland on a camping trip and started something special for his climbing friends.

After ordering and selling similar shirts straight away, they found that it was difficult to keep the shirts in stock. They ordered from other places such as Argentina and New Zealand and soon realised that a fashion craze in the United States had started. Selling the clothing helped to support the hardware business, by 1972 they were selling cagoules and bivouac sacks from Scotland.

After manufacturing their clothing, they decided they needed a name, and decided on Patagonia, which they say can be pronounced in every language.

Patagonia brings to mind, as we once wrote in a catalog introduction, “romantic visions of glaciers tumbling into fjords, jagged windswept peaks, gauchos and condors.” It’s been a good name for us, and it can be pronounced in every language.

Patagonia has grown as a brand over the years, stemming from a tiny hardware business, the brand now has international respect among the masses. They deliver clothing that is not just for mountain climbing, but for a range of silent sports such as skiing, snowboarding, surfing, fly fishing, paddling and trail running.

Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis

Our Top 5 Festival Essentials

Heading to a festival this summer? Whether it’s in the UK or living it large abroad, every festival goer feels the challenge. Sleep deprivation, hangovers and not to mention the hygiene, or lack of it. Festivals are the best and worst times of your life. When all grooming routines go the distance, and by the 3rd day you’re resembling Tom Hardy from The Revenant, ungroomed and in serious need of some TLC. While we can’t promise to cure those hangovers we think our top 5 festival essentials will keep your style in check this summer season.

Patagonia Arbor Backpack

1. Getting to the festival is just the beginning, after queuing in the car for what seems like years, you’re finally at the drop off point, only to find you’ve got a good mile or two to walk to get into the festival. Alleviate some of that pressure with our Patagonia Arbour, a spacious 26 Litre capacity backpack that will hold all your essentials and has padded straps and a water repellent finish. If that isn’t a festival essential we don’t know what is!
Barbour hip flask gift set

2. You’re settling in, relaxing with a drink and then before you know it, it’s time to go and watch the Foo Fighters but they’re up on the main stage. This requires lots of walking and drink spilling. Not now it doesn’t, our 2nd festival essential lets you keep the spirit going……literally. Our Barbour hip flask and 6 glasses fits perfectly into your next festival essential, the windbreaker, so all you have to do is fill it up and head on over.

Adidas windbreaker

3. A windbreaker is a classic when it comes to festivals. This go to jacket will become your savoir. For those that have been to a festival before, think Glastonbury, mud, rain and wind. Now the unprepared might give up and head back to their tent, but there’s no need when you have a windbreaker. Protecting yourself from the elements couldn’t be easier and more stylish, so there’s no need to miss your favourite band. You can dance all night, or until your bed, well tent is calling. We would recommend the Adidas windbreaker, featuring a hood (bring it on rain), a central zip pocket and a 60’s style, this retro piece is festival perfection.

Rayban Sunglasses

4. For that rare occasion when the sun does come out, or when the light of day gets too much in your hungover haze, a pair of sunglasses is a must. Our range of Rayban sunglasses give that un-kept look a whole new edge of cool.

Patagonia’s Sustainable Business is More Important Than Ever

Alongside ‘immersive’ and ‘influencer’, the word ‘sustainability’ is one of the major buzzwords of recent times, particularly in the world of fashion. It makes sense: company ethics have been a growing concern for consumers, in terms of both human and environmental impact. It’s undeniable that some of the biggest names in fashion have been making headway into improving their green credentials: fast fashion giants H&M and Zara have both been seeking to reduce their carbon footprint, while adidas and Nike have been introducing technologies like Prime/Flyknit in order to cut down on industrial waste. However, it has been argued that these are examples of ‘greenwashing’: companies employing environmentally-friendly policies, while still promoting the mass consumption that has got landfills overflowing. It’s a step in the right direction, of course, but surely more can be done?

Patagonia JacketsEnter Patagonia. The veteran outdoor company is a firm favourite here at Aphrodite, and has loudly championed environmentally-friendly practices since its inception in 1973. In honour of Earth Day (April 22nd) Hypebeast recently posted a profile following the company from a sustainability perspective, and is a very interesting read for anyone interested in the brand, its mission or how a sustainable, socially-conscious brand could be run. It’s also refreshing, if not unusal, to see that a brand of Patagonia’s stature is committed to such an anti-capitalist standpoint.

Patagonia has stuck to its narrative, churning out documentaries that communicated the brand’s anti-materialist philosophy at every turn. Beyond mere branded propaganda, the brand’s own athletes and ambassadors have also exhibited a profoundly inspiring compassion not only for the environment, but the unsung people and communities that make the environment so compelling.

6 Must Have Lightweight Jackets

We have gathered together 6 of our favourite lightweight jackets that we think are absolute must haves for your Spring/Summer 17 wardrobe.

This performance pullover is a lightweight and simple jacket created in a 2.5 layer 100% recycled nylon which has a waterproof/breathable barrier and DWR (durable water repellent) finish. Crafted in a regular fit, it packs into the front torso pocket. The center front zip reaches half way down the jacket to where the jacket changes to red, it is concealed with a minimal-welt exterior and interior storm flap. Other key features are the elasticized cuffs, microfleece-lined neck, draw-cord hem, adjustable roll-down hood and finished off with a Patagonia logo badge on the chest.

A bold statement piece from CP Company this season, the Watch Viewer Jacket returns in a crisp white colourway. The key elements to this jacket are its ‘T-Mack 3 Layer Waterproof Construction’, a poppered stormflap over the branded zip frontal fastening, adjustable cuff fastening, roll away hood for those rare days without a down pour, and various pockets to the front of the jacket and the lining.

The Membrana 3L TC fabric from Stone Island is a 3 layer light performance fabric. It is crafted by using an opaque nylon outer face bonded to a breathable water resistant membrane which is protected by an imperceptible polyester base. The unique colouration is derived from the garment dyeing procedure that the fabric undergoes. A fixed hood protects you in the harsher weather whilst contrasting zippers adorn the front and 2x zip pockets. The removable Stone Island compass patch badge to the arm finishes off this fantastic piece.

A versatile outer layer, this pullover anorak is super lightweight and packable to help keep you prepared for the unpredictable weather. Adjustable hood and hem for the perfect fit, with a handy front pocket to store your essentials. Finished with classic Napapijri details in a tonal print.

Patagonia Brand Guide

Introduction to Patagonia

There’s nothing worse than being unprepared, and with Great Britain’s weather having the unfortunate ability to change in a matter of moments, the fact is that we all often are. However, this could soon be a thing of the past, as a new breed of fashion labels, born from the great outdoors comes out of the cold and onto the high street, bringing with them all the expertise and knowledge they have gained from years in the wilderness. The latest brand to make the transition from an all-around ready for action label, to a high-spec fashionable weather beater is American climbing brand Patagonia.

The Patagonia brand is steeped in history. It was born from one man’s love for what he did, and like many passions, the idea of developing something to help assist not only himself but also create something that others would love in the process, drove him to envisage something brilliant. The man who carried this vision was Yvon Chounaird, who started climbing in America when he was 14. He grew an insatiable passion for the sport, travelling to America to find the best rock faces to climb, and meeting fellow climbers with who he would become best friends along the way. Chounaird started out in the early days of rock climbing when fixtures were left in the rock permanently, allowing climbers to share paths and ropes. This was a chunky, permanent scar on the landscape which made the rock crack, so Chounaird began his first business, making removable fittings called ‘chocks’. He began making them by hand after he bought the tools he needed from a junkyard in California. Word soon spread of his invention, and the production of Chounaird’s innovation went industrial, as ‘chocks’ became the norm for a majority of climbers. He then went on to redesign nearly every piece of climbing equipment, bringing them up to date with new lightweight, stronger materials like aluminium. Patagonia Sweatshirt In Coral Chounaird began to travel the world climbing with his friends, moving from the Rockies to the Alps, and even to Scotland. It was here that Chounaird picked up some new climbing clothing- a heavy-duty, overbuilt Rugby top. The colours were striking and new, and a visual break away from the rock climbing clothing at the time which consisted of beige shorts and white shirts. Chounaird soon became inundated with requests for his Rugby shirt and began to ship styles from England, which were made by Umbro.
This side of the business, which was much more profitable than making climbing equipment, became Chounaird’s priority. He began shipping clothing from all over the world, and sold it under a name he came up with with the help of his climbing friends- Patagonia was chosen due to its ability to be pronounced in every language.

Patagonia Jackets In Modern Culture

Patagonia soon became a well-recognised label, as Chounaird began to bring innovative fabrics from other lifestyles into climbing. Elements from fishermen’s outfits, such as quick-drying cotton were introduced, as well as insulation through extra internal layering, and waterproof outer layers. The new clothing range was a huge success, but the colour palette of all outdoor clothing was still very bland. In the early 1980’s Patagonia took a huge risk and introduced clothing with radical colouring. Bright red, cobalt and teal were used to add interest to the collection. The risk paid off, and the influx of colour created a huge fad, helping the Patagonia brand reach out beyond the world of climbing and into the wardrobes of the fashion pack.
Patagonia had become a hugely desirable brand, both on the high street and on the cliff face almost overnight.Patagonia Sweatshirt Jacket In Grey  The success of Patagonia’s early days still lives on, and despite its fluctuation into the fashion world, they still create clothing aimed at the outdoor pursuits consumer. Priding themselves on an economically friendly approach to production, Patagonia creates clothing for the ‘silent sports’ like fishing, climbing, hiking and skiing. Like the sports that they provide for, there is nothing loud or brash about Patagonia clothing- they are functional, appropriate and ready for any situation.
