New Balance 991 20th Anniversary Release

20 Years Crafted, 20 Years A Staple, 20 Years Of The 991

Dig out the balloons, light the candles and suspend the bunting because the New Balance 991 is turning 20 this year. For two stellar decades, the shoe has charmed the masses with its perfectly pared-back allure. That humble but fierce combination of grey undertones and ABZORB cushioning has simultaneously propelled the silhouette into a true cult favourite and now the Boston-based brand is celebrating the design with a special commemorative release. The New Balance 991 20th anniversary shoe launches this Friday 26th February 2021 and Aphrodite is a proud stockist.

To mark the upcoming launch, we’re taking a retrospective look back at the iconic 991 while unravelling details over the latest celebratory iteration. Keep reading to find out more.

History of the New Balance 991: 2001

In the same year that hit mockumentary The Office hit UK tv screens, Fast & Furious premiered at the box office and Jamiroquai’s A Funk Odyssey topped the album charts, Boston hailing brand New Balance rolled out the 991 sneaker under its 99x series. The 99x series was first conceptualised in ‘82 when the original 990 trainer began transcending the footwear industry with heaps of innovative tech. In the years leading up to 2001, the line left little to the imagination; toying with ground-breaking cushioning, unheard of proportions and larger-than-life NB credentials – to which the label has become so synonymous.

New Balance 991 20th Anniversary

The arrival of the 991 in the early noughties signified a changing of the guard for the 99x’s lineage. The New Balance 991 was noticeably more streamline, still in its identifiable low-profile look, but with less emphasis at the toebox. It proved to be the contemporary overhaul the dynasty needed and it quickly began stealing the hearts of multiple generations. It was also the first shoe in the brand’s roster to carry ABZORB cushioning in both its front and beneath the heel, leading the shoe, and subsequently the 99x series, to become closely associated with immeasurable comfort.

The New Balance 991 in popular culture: 2001 – 2021

In the years following its inception, the 991 yielded mass appeal. Managing to harmonise performance-primed tech with an understated, athletic aesthetic, the silhouette pulled in the approval of millennials and the globe’s A-List – Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Kanye West to name just a few of the shoe’s distinguished fans. Most notably, late Apple founder and tech maestro, Steve Jobs, frequently donned the sneakers on the streets and to global conferences, where they quickly helped form his signature look.

New Balance 991 Sneakers Anniversary

Of recent, New Balance has embraced its cross-generational stance, famously attributing the phrase “worn by supermodels in London and dads in Ohio” to its mission statement. The concept of ‘normcore’ – a trend summarised by the rejection of extravagance – reached its peak in 2018 and enabled the resurgence of the 991 under the ‘Dad Shoe’ umbrella. In fact, New Balance birthed the ‘Dad Shoe’ trend way before it became accepted by the mainstream and designers in their hundreds jumped on the bandwagon.

The New Balance 991 possesses a certain je ne sais quoi that continues to make it a frontrunner of the scene, even twenty years after we first laid eyes on it.

New Balance 991 Anniversary release: 2021

This Friday (26/02/2021) marks the release of the New Balance 991 anniversary special. Mimicking its debut look, the trainer melds a two-tone grey colourway, with pig suede overlays, navy ‘N’ logos and ABZORB cushioning to supply a wardrobe staple that we’re all rightfully familiar with. Crafted proudly in the UK in the brand’s Flimby factory, this one-off model boasts ‘2001’ embroidery at the backbone whilst a 20th anniversary woven patch sits to the inner tongue.

The first style born under founder Massimo Osti’s reign to come equipped with goggles, it remains one of the most cherished styles from the CP Company archives. An undeniable piece of casual culture history, the jacket comes Reimagined for SS21 with a performance focused VENTILE fabric.

Made in England since 1943 VENTILE is a historic material when it comes to outerwear created through the process of weaving together loose cotton fibres, resulting in a fabric that is not only durable but completely organic. Crafted from Memri, a purposely creased fabric which is made from combining a densely woven polyester and nylon micro-fibre canvas, the garment is treated to the, ‘tracery’ effect. Overprinted using sublimation, heat, pressure and time are used in unison to achieve a unique three dimensional finish which casts artificial shadows to highlight the jackets key points of interest.

Naturally water repellent, the Metropolis Jacket is further enhanced with a number of pockets to keep possessions close to hand, whilst its adjustable hood and built in face mask ensure ample elemental protection. Comme des Garcons Wallets

Each wallet is skillfully crafted in Spain with smooth leather employed throughout which is sure to patina gracefully thanks to the label’s assured quality. Serving up a standard wallet design, alongside a larger pouch and a small-scale coin wallet, the Ruby Eyes collection keeps things relatively simple to the exterior. Saturated shades of tangerine as well as sky-blues and tan don each silhouette with flashes of gold foil and cryptic, curved motifs spilling out across the base.

Zipping open with gold-toned hardware, each colourway opens to reveal two peering eyes and it’s not what you may immediately think… Is it Comme PLAY’s iconic bug eyes making an appearance? Guess again. It’s instead that slithering surprise we touched upon earlier. Hidden inside each wallet is a playful snake illustration, complete with ornate ruby jewels for eyes.

Clarks Wallabee Cup

Enter The Clarks Originals Wallabee Cup

Just landed – Clarks Originals Wallabee Cup Plus OG Newness

Since the Wallabee first debuted in the ‘60s, few shoes have rivalled its ubiquitous, tangible hold on trend-driven society. Not only a perennial player in the footwear realm but amidst a range of popular subcultures too, the silhouette is a cult classic that yields immense longevity. Each season it’s reworked in a multitude of materials and shades and for 2021 the design has taken a bulbous turn… Allow us to introduce the Clarks Originals Wallabee Cup.

Clarks Originals Wallabee Cup Black

Available in warm maple and intense black colourways, the Wallabee Cup is noticeably different shape-wise in comparison to its forerunner. This new kid on the block takes that signature crepe sole that Clarks has become so synonymous with and rendered it into a cup sole instead – allowing the flexible, latex bonding to cradle the entire circumference of the shoe. This higher sidewall allows for enhanced protection where the toe and heel are both concerned.

Clarks Originals Wallabee Cup Maple

Aside from its chunky sole, the shoe’s identity remains largely unchanged; the ankle-skimming profile is reaffirmed, the iconic moccasin construction – originally inspired by an old German design dubbed the ‘Grasshopper’ – is present alongside the crinkly, lightweight cushioning that resides underfoot. Buttery nubuck and plush suede are dusted across the upper of each design respectively.

While the Aphrodite office remains very much abuzz with the arrival of the Wallabee Cup, we can’t go on without touching upon the OG, which too has landed on our desks in striking new tones. If you were looking to slip further under the radar in 2021 (if that’s even possible after 2020’s stay-at-home agenda), a camouflage rendition is available, complete with a marbled, modern guise.

Clarks Off White Camo

Elsewhere, a ‘grey combi’ version recalls the shoe’s acid-house heyday, saturated pops of turquoise at the lining, heel, swing tag and sole evoke memories of that hedonistic era which went on to define a generation.

Jerry Lorenzo partners with adidas

Fear of God Founder Jerry Lorenzo Joins adidas

The creative will take charge of the brand’s basketball division

Hours after the announcement of a long-term partnership between Adidas and Fear of God, the mastermind behind the madness, Jerry Lorenzo, took to twitter to unveil his bold three stripe neck tattoo, cementing the deal, and sending Nike back to the bench. Alongside this, Lorenzo was also appointed as the head of Adidas’ ever growing basketball division, recently saying in a press release that: “This is a role that is unprecedented in its very nature and nuanced attribution that it defies all titles and traditional definitions.”

“This is a fearless move where shared vision and conviction are at the heart of the accretion of two brands shaping sports and culture, with the purpose to truly multiply our nuanced strengths to revolutionize the performance basketball industry forever. Adidas and Fear of God share the same dream for the future of basketball, on and beyond the court, and we look forward to changing the face of the industry through a new model that will unfold before us in the coming years.”

Jerry Lorenzo

It seems that Lorenzo’s mindset for the German sportswear brand is to revolutionize the performance basketball industry, something that would not have been possible at all back at Nike, but it seems as though Adidas’ basketball break is just a stones throw away.

Stay tuned to find out what comes of Jerry Lorenzo joining adidas.
