Brands from Bond

Bond fans are awaiting the highly anticipated release of Spectre, the new Bond film. The film is set to be released on November 6th and will be the fourth modern Bond film starring Daniel Craig. To make the wait a little easier, we thought we would throwback to Casino Royale and Skyfall, where we see Craig sport both Barbour and Sunspel in his role as Bond.

The Sunspel ‘Riviera’ Polo

Sunspel has been a prime label for Bond, the brand even recreated the iconic blue shorts worn by Sean Connery in Thunderball, 1965. In the 2006 film Casino Royale, Daniel Craig is seen in several Sunspel shirts. Most famously the blue polo which was tailored especially for him to wear by the brand. The design is based on the 1950’s classic made for the Italian Riviera, hence how it adapted to its name, the Riviera polo shirt.

The Barbour Beacon Sports Jacket

The original jacket worn by Daniel Craig in Skyfall was the Barbour Tokihito Sports Jacket. Director Sam Mendes wanted to add a vintage theme to this particular scene, which was achieved perfectly with the use of this jacket. The Barbour Beacon Sports jacket is a recreation of the one used in the film, looking pretty much the same with a few small changes along the way. This jacket is ideal for the unpredictable British weather with its 100% waxed cotton outer. It sports a slim fit which contributes to its classic and stylish look.

Barbour Tartan

It’s no secret that Tartan plays a prime role in adding a classic authentic vibe to Barbour’s staple pieces. All Tartans originate from the same ‘sett.’ Meaning they share the same pattern and weight of lines. The Tartan has been also confirmed by Scottish experts Kinloch Anderson in Edinburgh. From the opening of Barbour in 1894 till the 1990’s, Tartan was used as linings in various jackets. The Dress Gordon Tartan was the most distinctive which the brand used, found in the earlier versions of the Bedale jacket. This was until Helen Barbour ventured to Edinburgh, later making the discovery that Dress Gordon Tartan was not exclusive to the Barbour name. It was then that Dame Margaret Barbour contacted specialists Kinloch Anderson, who helped research their family history and create a tartan exclusive to Barbour.

Barbour’s wide range of different Tartans consist of;

  • Dress Tartan
  • Classic Tartan
  • Modern Tartan
  • Ancient Tartan
  • Muted Tartan
  • Cardinal Tartan
  • Sporting Tartan

Barbour Tartans

The design of the classic Barbour Tartans derived from the district of Ayrshire, where the Barbour name originated. Together the colours create a neutral palette of rich reds, greens, browns and yellows. Over the years they have been entwined into different garments where designers see them to match. It is normally found that the navy pieces feature the matching Dress Tartan lining, where Sage garments boast the Ancient Tartan, and black is paired with the Modern Tartan. A number of pieces include the use of Tartan, whether it’s a lining of a jacket, a pocket or collar trim, a hat, scarf of different accessory.

Here at Aphrodite we stock various garments which present the unique and timeless use of Tartan, including the iconic Beacon Sports jacket, based on the exact jacket Daniel Craig wore in Skyfall. Also the Monty bag, which is a staple accessory offering the full classic Barbour Tartan to the outer.

Barbour x White Mountaineering

Barbour x White Mountaineering

After much anticipation and speculation on various blogs and forums, the Barbour x White Mountaineering collaboration has finally been launched. Yosuke Aizawa’s White Mountaineering label has merged with British Heritage brand Barbour for one of the most mouth-watering collaborations of 2015. Combining years of technical knowledge and tradition, the collaboration sees a range of waxed jackets, bags, shirts, t-shirts and shorts hit the market in a variety of eye-catching patterns.

Aizawa has used Barbour as inspiration for his White Mountaineering collection for years and even beforehand when working for Comme Des Garcons. His recognition for the love of Barbour in Japan has played a massive part in the collaboration, allowing him to take the traditional jackets that the Japanese love so much and give them a modern touch.
