adidas x Raf Simons Ozweego Trainers

The adidas x Raf Simons Ozweego Returns

The adidas x Raf Simons Ozweego, one of the most beloved and well recognised silhouettes born out of the esteemed Belgian fashion designers work with the German sportswear company, a trend-setting powerhouse and one of the few somewhat innocuous silhouettes, alongside the Stan Smith and Response, fortunate enough to be plucked from the adidas archives for a generous dose of collaborative TLC. Adding an expectantly elevated touch to the ‘90s original, the Ozweego found itself at the forefront of the pairings debut collection and quickly set to work tearing the low top sneaker rule book of the time cover to cover.

With ‘ugly sneakers’ now seen as an established trend, with the likes of Balenciaga, Maison Margiela and countless other designers throwing their hat into the proverbial ring, the same can’t quite be said for 2013 when the Ozweego, with its multilayered frame, bulky exaggerated uppers and chunky midsole took its first tentative step into the limelight.

Like much of the Belgian designers work, the trainers starkly contrasted the typical styling found at the time but through their acceptance into popular culture, most notably with A$AP Rocky’s ‘please Don’t Touch My Raf’, and sightings on the feet of countless celebrities they slowly but surely became mainstays in rotations across the world, setting the wheels in motion for not only the larger than life footwear seen pounding modern day pavements but the degradation of the walls which stood between high-end fashion and streetwear.

adidas x Raf Simons Ozweego New Releases

Now, after a brief foray into a spot of 3D mapping and some optical illusion inducing French painting techniques earlier in the year, adidas and Raf Simons once again turn their attention to the forefather of chunky sneakers adding a fresh lick of paint to a now undeniable cult classic.

Taking influence from the ‘Bunny Boot’ a type of footwear worn by the American armed forces to combat the harsh conditions found in Alaska, the adidas x Raf Simons Ozweego remains largely unchanged, utilising the same oversized panelled design and sculpted midsole combination that has etched its name among the very best in gargantuan proportioned kicks.

Up top the trainers take a more subdued approach than some of the Ozweego’s past iterations, boasting a supple premium leather construction and swapping out some of the more out there features, such as translucent plastic inserts and entirely cut out sections, for clean coatings of monochromatic colouring.

Perhaps one of the most notable features, and where things begin to take a more left field approach, is below where a mirrored TPU film coats the trainers from mid-section down, playing with proportions and hailing back to the ‘70s glam rock influences found embedded throughout the designers SS19 offering.

adidas x Raf Simons Ozweego Footwear

With fads changing like the wind, the pressures of hype and a seemingly unlimited supply of styles waiting in the wings for their chance at the top spot, we think it’s fair to say that the footwear landscape has never been so fiercely contested. Which is why, 6 years on from its original release, the fact that the Ozweego still remains firmly positioned amongst the best of the best is not only a testament to the shoe itself but the great minds responsible for its creation.

The adidas x Raf Simons Ozweego is available both in store and online at Aphrodite1994 on the 23/05/19.

adidas Bring Acidic Colours to the Raf Simons Detroit Runner

From Americana to anarcho-punk, legendary designer and polymath Raf Simons holds a host of influences in his work, whether for his own fashion line or in his long-running collaboration with adidas. This season, Simons draws on the aesthetics of 70s glam rock for the newest iteration of the adidas by Raf Simons Detroit Runner, drenching the silhouette in unexpected colour combinations.

Already steeped in glam-rock’s futurist aesthetic, the Detroit Runner is elevated this season with striking colour-ups that are a stark departure from the tonal approach of previous seasons. One pair is swathed in the acidic colour palette of the era, with a black base offset by bold red and lime green to the futuristic sole unit, while the other is more sober, coming in a monochrome make-up. Both pairs are completed with the designer’s signature RS lettering to the canvas uppers, this time offered in a mirrored finish for an extra 70s touch.

adidas x Raf Simons Detroit Runner

Known for shy and retiring designs, Belgian super designer Raf Simons has linked up with adidas for another edition of flamboyancy in the form of the hyper-futuristic Detroit Runner.

The familiar canvas design to the upper of the shoe is bonded to a heavy-duty sole unit reminiscent of the avant-garde footwear styles of science fiction, lending the shoe a retro-futurism design with its clash of low top trainer and utility boot, this brand new edition is highlighted by a striking metallic wrap to the midsole bringing the two worlds together.

Detroit’s heavy involvement and development of the automation industry in post-industrial revolution America placed a metropolis future vision into process for the city, seeing factories and skyscrapers rise and business boom making way for the high concept and retro-futuristic designs that merely dreams of a simpler time.

This design revolution plays a major factor in Raf Simons’ latest work with the German giants in the Detroit Runner.

The upper takes the design of the simple canvas sneaker, seen in a variety of editions since the early 1900s from brands like Converse, Novesta and VansIt’s a basic universal design that reigns synonymous with a plethora of brands and designers. The sole comes straight out of the school of Margiela, Ozweegos and other ostentatious designs, taking on a somewhat Robocop esque action boot aesthetic with its big tread and sole encapsulating take to the bonding. The chrome to the midsole harkens to the innovative automotive designs of the 1950s with its trailblazing movement that saw spaceship-like cars clad and cast in chrome for an alien concept.

We have to applaud the influences that have placed these two sneaker worlds into the same design with great effect, evoking a concept bigger than fashion’s obsession with bulbous designs.

The adidas X Raf Simons Detroit Runner lands in 3 colourways on August 30th at Aphrodite1994.com

Raf Simons Continues his Patriotic Streak with the Replicant Ozweego ‘Belgium’ Edition

Having recently paid tribute to his adoptive homeland of the United States with the ‘USA’ version of the Replicant Ozweego, Raf Simons once again enlists adidas to craft a patriotic edition of the iconic sneaker, this time wrapped in the colours of his mother country, Belgium.

adidas_Raf_Simons_Ozweego_Belgium_01

Just as the previous version coincided with American Independence Day, Raf has timed the latest release with Belgian National Day, which falls on the 21st of July. Dating back to 1890, the national holiday also celebrates the genesis of Belgium as an independent nation, so it’s easy to see why a free thinking designer like Raf Simons would want to pay respects to such monumentous occasions. For the rest of us, they’re just a great-looking pair of shoes, with those avant-garde uppers dressed predominantly in black with hits of yellow and red to the sole unit.

As with the USA Edition, the shoes come in a large box with three pairs of matching geometric-printed socks included, so the wearer can really highlight those deconstructed cut-out side panels with the eyecatching yellow and black socks.

Highly limited as usual, the adidas by Raf Simons RS Replicant Ozweego ‘Belgium’ will be available online at 9am BST on the 12th of July, with remaining stock available in-store afterwards.

Guest Blog: Sole Supplier Rate the New Raf Simons by adidas Ozweego ‘USA Edition’

Ever since its first release half a decade ago, the Ozweego sneaker from adidas & Raf Simons has been dividing opinions with its blown-out proportions and striking colour selections. Even as footwear has trended towards the chunkier end of the spectrum, the Ozweego has been a real ‘Marmite’ shoe. To mark the release of the patriotic ‘USA Edition’ of the deconstructed Replicant Ozweego, we asked the sneaker experts at The Sole Supplier for their opinions on the controversial kicks. Here’s what they had to say:

Chris: The ultimate shoe for the Summer, it literally has holes cut out of it for ultimate ventilation. Couple this with a poppy colour palette and chunky silhouette and you have a serious sneaker on your hands.

With the addition of 3 pairs of socks, this sneaker is ticking all the right boxes in my opinion.

Dan: The Raf Simons Ozweego Replicant is the David Bowie of dad shoes. Eye catching, futuristic and 100% on trend. To top it all off you never worry about your sock game again. Sublime.

George: Definitely a pair that are going to look banging for the Summer. The holes in the sidewall will make these super breathable, especially for those with sweaty feet. The colour scheme is popping, particularly if you like strawberries.

Josh: Instant cop… Simple as that.

adidas & Raf Simons Drop a Patriotic Ozweego in Time for Independence Day

Always a master of mixing high and low fashion, Belgian design legend Raf Simons has a long-lasting pedigree when it comes to designing sneakers; Simons can arguably be credited with the popularisation of the high-fashion sneaker through his collections with Dior and his own label. But it was the long-running collaboration with adidas that has spawned one of the designers most beloved creations: the chunky, outrageous Ozweego. It’s been five years since the silhouette’s debut, and since then the Ozweego’s bulbous, self-consciously ugly design has proven to be a blueprint for high-fashion sneakers of contemporary times: oversized, ostentatious and excessive, reflective of Simons’ obsession with the American psyche.

adidas Raf Simons Replicant Ozweego USA Edition

Now residing in New York, Simons is celebrating the Independence Day of his adoptive home with a commemorative version of the latest iteration of the Ozweego, the Replicant, made up in the USA’s emblematic red, white and blue. The Replicant Ozweego brings even more avant-garde flavour to the silhouette, with the signature latex bubbles replaced with cut-out sections for a deconstructed look.

This highly-limited release also includes three pairs of matching geometric-patterned socks, allowing the wearer to customise the look further. The airy design plus the mix of patriotic colours with pastel lilac makes for a great summer sneaker for those that like their footwear to command attention.

Why Is The Ozweego Replicant So Popular

In the last year, we have seen an unexpected trend emerging. Dubbed the ‘Dad sneaker‘ because, well they look like something that your Dad would wear to sum it up, with a focus on bulky silhouettes, the more extroverted and maximalist the style the better. Raf Simons & Adidas were way ahead of the curve on this trend, back in 2013 the first Ozweego model was released, back then they didn’t receive a standing ovation as people said they were too bulky and back then ankle grabbing jeans were on everyone’s legs. But times change and trends vary, so now people are into wide-leg pants. Since the recent emergence of the Balenciaga Triple S and the Gucci Rhyton Runners people are finally starting to see just how influential the Ozweegos were, so if we could give Adidas & Raf Simons a round of applause that would be great.

The Ozweego is continuing to push boundaries in 2018, with its latest ‘Replicant‘ model featuring a deconstructed build, with cut out panelling along the flanks (So you may need to up your sock game). Arriving in three distinct colourways, all of which follow a two-tone colour scheme.

I don’t know how, but these can be rocked with virtually any style, so whether you want to rock them with a pair of cropped wide-leg trousers or a pair of tracksuit bottoms, it’ll still work and look great. They have an ironic style that just allows them to transition between looks with ease.

All day comfort is guaranteed thanks to the adiPRENE outsole, which can be seen on the likes of the recent Yeezy 500.  This gives you a high amount of impact absorption with claims it can absorb impacts of over 5 times a person’s body weight, so you can theoretically wear these all day without any issue. Plus with the cut-out sections, they’re highly breathable keeping your feet feeling fresh on the warmer days.

Three colourways of the adidas x Raf Simons RS Replicant Ozweego are releasing here at Aphrodite online and in-store 10am Thursday 12th April.
