adidas LXCON : 90s Inspired Trainer

adidas have tapped into the spirit of the mid-90s with the LXCON.

The mid-90s were a fantastic time for adidas aficionados: in addition to their back-to-basics Equipment range, the 3 Stripes blessed us with forgotten gems like the Lexicon running shoe. While not strictly part of the Equipment family, the Lexicon held the same innovative, utilitarian spirit as its brethren, utilising a visible cable system to anchor the midfoot to the ankle collar for additional stability and integrity for runners. Like many of its stablemates from that period, though, the Lexicon has been long since confined to history books and collectors’ shelves as an obscure relic of times past. Now in 2019, 25 years after its release, the Lexicon is back in a newly updated form: the adidas LXCON.

One of the first offerings from the adidas Spring 2019 range, the LXCON is built with an eye to the past and a foot in the present. Keeping the visual language of the original intact, with the visible cabling around the heel and midfoot, the LXCON is updated with lightweight mesh construction, a sculpted Adiprene midsole and Ortholite cushioning to bring it right up to date. Overall the LXCON represents a clash of technical features with more artisanal detailing, seen in the topstitch detailing to the 3 Stripes on the sidewalls. Recently teased by actor, director and unlikely street fashion star Jonah Hill, the LXCON appears first in this retro-flavoured colourway, utilising a beige base as a palette for pops of purple, teal and red in a nod to the silhouette’s origins. Despite its outlandish looks, the LXCON works perfectly on feet in today’s climate, slotting into elevated streetwear looks like Hill’s with ease. It’s a strong start to the year for adidas; stay tuned for more 3 Stripes goodness on the way.
