New Balance ‘Moon Daze’ Pack – Landing Soon

Celebrating the Boston based brand’s annual Grey Day…

New Balance has established a legacy founded on consistent innovation and technological progress in the footwear industry; And, although the brand is often linked with cutting-edge designs in vibrant hues, it’s simply impossible to think of New Balance without picturing a classic pair of Grey trainers… But how has this come to be?

What is New Balance Grey Day

During the late 1970s, runners grew increasingly frustrated as their white trainers were being ruined by the harsh city conditions, with the main culprit being the asphalt. The consistent kicking up of dust, along with the knocking and scraping of runners’ feet, resulted in even the most durable of trainers being tinted a light grey shade by the urban environment. Keen to find a solution for the issue, New Balance opted to release an array of running trainers with lightweight grey suede uppers, perfectly matching the shades of the city’s asphalt and seamlessly integrating into consumers’ lifestyles.

The trainers were an instant hit, and after several decades, the colour has become a fundamental aspect of the brand’s identity, playing a crucial role in New Balance’s legacy. So much so that the brand host’s an annual ‘Grey Day’ as an homage to their adopted signature colour. As part of this years celebrations, New Balance are releasing a bespoke collection of trainers dubbed the ‘Moon Daze’ Pack. Drawing inspiration from extra terrestrial experiences, the collection is a product of the thought “what would shoes look like after walking on another planet?” And the result is out of this world…

New Balance 574

New Balance 574: An Icon Re-Imagined

New Balance 574 History

Flicking through the metaphorical pages of New Balance’s archives, one would quickly stumble upon a true classic – the New Balance 574. Originally released in 1988, the 574 quickly became one of New Balance’s most popular and enduring trainer designs, thanks to its timeless style, exceptional comfort, and reliable performance.

New Balance 574

The 574’s distinctive silhouette is instantly recognisable, featuring a streamlined shape with a round toe, padded collar and tongue, and a sturdy yet flexible rubber sole. Its upper is typically made from a combination of suede, leather, and nylon, creating a durable yet breathable design that can withstand the rigors of everyday wear.

But what truly sets the New Balance 574 apart is its versatility. While it was initially marketed as a running shoe, it has since become a favourite of fashion-conscious individuals worldwide, thanks to its juxtaposing understated yet sophisticated design. The 574 can be dressed up or down, worn with jeans or shorts, and paired with almost any type of outfit.

New Balance 574

Latest New Balance 574

New Balance’s latest versions of the 574 involve an exploration of textural and tonal combinations, presenting an experimental approach to the classic design. The first pair boasts striking tones of orange and olive, reminiscent of an Autumnal colour palette, and easy to style with your classic navy and green hues. The second pair features a greyscale colour scheme that leans towards the neutral colours commonly associated with the brand’s iconic styles. This tonal combination adds an air of sophistication to the shoe, making it an excellent choice for those who prefer a more understated look.

New Balance 574

Despite the clear contrast in visuals between the two, the 574’s quality is unparalleled with it’s premium suede’s and leather’s truly defining the character of the shoe…

Once you’ve finally wrapped your head around which of the two you prefer (a hard choice, I know) you can head online or in-store at Aphrodite and grab a pair for just £109.

New Balance Rainier Boot

New Balance’s Rainier Boot – The Hiking Hybrid You Didn’t Know You Needed

The New Balance Rainier silhouette was first introduced back in 1982, and was crafted upon the advice of well know mountain expert Lou Whittaker.

Following a mountainside accident on an ascent up Mt Rainier, Lou claimed that it was his breathable and comfortable trainers that saved his feet from a possible amputation incident. While he praised the trainers that saved his skin, he did note that they lacked the support and grip that was needed for a hillside ascent. He formulated an idea for a trainer-boot hybrid that would combine the best of both worlds, and took it to New Balance owner Jim Davis, and in 1982 the Rainier Boot was born.
New Balance Rainier Boot
It arrived crafted to Lou’s request, a lightweight boot with a trainer like construction. To the upper a mesh base offered breathability while a leather or suede outer panel protected the wearer from rocks and rubble. Metal eyelets offered secure lacing and subtle branding was offered in the form of ‘NB’ embroidery to the Rainiers side panels. Underfoot a rubber sole provided traction and grip on loose ground, making any mountainside ascent a breeze. The model proved popular and only two years after its creation, it was used to achieve the greatest feat of all, summiting Everest.

Following Teddy Santis’ revival of the model in a New Balance x Aime Leon Dore Collaboration in 2022, New Balance have re-released the style to demanding consumers. Updating it with a Vibram outsole, but remaining true to the rest of the OG construction, this Rainier Boot arrives as functional as it ever has been. While now it is viewed as more of a lifestyle boot, there’s no doubt that it doesn’t pack a punch (or kick?) when it comes to vigorous hiking…  Did we mention that someone has climbed Everest in these?
