Saucony History

Saucony was first established in 1898 on the banks of the River Saucony in a small town named Kutztown, Pensylvania USA, by 4 businessmen. Their mission was to produce their own line of walking shoes available for adults and children. Their first factory was opened on the banks of the Saucony Creeks, thus naming the brand Saucony. The name, according to the Native Americans can be translated into ‘mouth of a creek or river’, and this has had a huge influence on the brands logo. Taking the inspiration from their surrounding location, the logo represents the endless flow of the creeks waterway, the 3 circles that can be seen symbolizes the 3 boulders lining the floor of the creek.

By 1910, the brand was manufacturing and turning around about 800 pairs of shoes daily, still focusing and specializing within the functional footwear field. At the same time, Russian Immigrant Abraham Hyde had opened a shoe store in Cambridge, Massachusetts, manufacturing and selling ‘carpet slippers’ constructed from old and unused scraps of rugs under the name A.R. Hyde & Sons.
The brand went from strength to strength, producing baseball shoes, roller boots and bowling shoes. During World War II the demand for shoes decreased dramatically as most men were drafted into the front line. A.R. Hyde & Sons were commissioned by the US Government to produce footwear for the Soldiers. Along with the Army connection. A.R. Hyde & Sons has a strong connection with NASA, being authorised to produce space boots for Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 team, the first manned crew to touch down on the moon.

Saucony was put up for sale in 1968 and A.R. Hyde & Sons bought the rights for the brand, moved the factory to Cambridge and began to sell the shoes from there. They were largely a brand for a small but serious group of runners until 1977, then it all changed. A top US magazine featured the shoes and brought the company national fame. Recognised with an award for ‘Best Quality’ by the magazine, the resulting popularity propelled the brand into the headlight, establishing the Saucony name and their ongoing reputation for high quality ad innovative technical performance.

To this day, Saucony is still being recognised from the running shoes industry for its innovation, technical leadership and quality products. Over the years the brand has developed their styles, designs and technologies to keep ahead of the game and always one step in front of other competitors. Winning numerous awards and accolades including numerous ‘Editors Choice Awards’ from Runners World Magazine, along with ‘International Best Innovation Award’, ‘Vendor of the Year’ and ‘Product of the Year Awards’, this brand is as much loved by the critics as the runners and general public.
