Nike Flyknit Upper Manufacturing

Fresh Air: How Nike Uses Technology to Push for Sustainability

Of all the myriad facts and figures about Nike that we’ve written about, this latest snippet, while not the most exciting, is perhaps the most important: over 75% of all of the brand’s product contains some recycled material.

Aside from the reuse of manufacturing waste — which the brand puts into everything from yarns to basketballs to running surfaces — some of the Swoosh’s iconic innovations, such as Air and Flyknit, are designed from the ground up with sustainability. Flyknit, for instance, uses a sophisticated computational knitting process to reduce the waste associated with traditional panelled shoe design by over 60%.

Meanwhile, Air technology — perhaps the tech most synonymous with Nike, and which the brand has granted its own Air Manufacturing Innovation facilities in Oregon and Missouri — has come a long way since its introduction in 1979, with advances in both manufacturing and sustainability pushing the limits of what can be achieved with as little impact as possible. Its latest Air innovations, the Air Max 270 and Air Vapormax sole units, use 70% and 75% recycled materials respectively, with the latter allowing Nike to remove the need for a foam midsole, further reducing waste and environmental impact.

To cap it all off, the brand is on track to move towards using 100% renewable energy across all its United States operations, and worldwide by 2025. Impressive stuff, and reassuring to see from a brand with the global scale and reach that Nike has. adidas has also followed suit with its own similar sustainability programme, including its long-running collaboration with environmental organisation Parley for the Oceans, making shoes and apparel from recycled ocean plastics, so whichever side you choose, you can be assured that your footwear addiction isn’t as destructive as you might have thought.

Miami Vibes: The Air Max 97 Releases with Bold Neon Detailing

The success of Nike’s Air Max 97 revival shows little signs of slowing down, and is testament to the shoe’s forward-thinking design. Over the last year we’ve seen everything from rare archive reissues to luxurious snake print-infused looks, and now the Swoosh look to the South Beach of Miami to bring their latest inspiration, drenching the iconic runner in bold green and pink inspired by the infamous neon bar signs of the Floridian city.

Nike Air Max 97 South BeachStarting with a crisp white base that calls to mind a pristine linen suit (Miami Vice, anyone?), the Air Max 97s signature waves are wrapped with hits of both Kinetic Green and Pink Blast, along with the usual 3M reflective piping to keep the flashy look going long into the night.

The combination of a plush cushioned sockliner and a full-length Max Air sole unit ensure utmost comfort wherever and whatever you’re doing.

This colourway is one of the strongest we’ve seen to date, begging to be worn out in the sunshine where they belong. Available now both in store and online, don’t hang around if you want to bring a bit of Miami heat to your feet.

Nike Continues to Bring the Heat with Two Bold New Air Max 98s

With summer just about on the horizon, it’s time for sneakerheads to start thinking ahead to maximising their rotation’s curb appeal; after all, what better reason to flex in your best kicks than to turn heads? Nike’s Air Max 98 with its seismic, maximalist design is already a neck-snapper in its own right, but the Swoosh are about to unleash a pair of colourways that take things to a new level.

Nike Air Max 98 Summer Seas

First up we have the Kinetic Green, AKA ‘South Beach’ colourway. Inspired by the sun-drenched boulevards of Miami, the Air Max 98 here daubs over its subdued platinum and obsidian base with bold teal and coral accents for a look that just screams ‘summer’.

Nike AM98 Racer Blue

The second colourway takes a similar approach, retouching its base with eyecatching Racer Blue and Volt, evoking retro sportswear in the boldest possible way without veering into ‘obnoxious’ territory.

Air Max 98 Close Up

Colouring aside, the story remains the same for the Air Max 98, boasting layered nylon uppers with embroidered detailing, a synthetic leather mudguard and a unique lacing system, all set atop a chunky midsole with full-length visible Max Air for an overall uncompromising signature look.

Both pairs will be available online from 08.00 BST on the 10th of May, with an in-store release later that day. Previous colourways of the Air Max 98 have been in high demand and we expect the same of these two bangers, so don’t sleep if you don’t want to regret missing out.

Summer Heat: Nike’s Air Max 1 Returns in Two Amazing Colourways

Of all of Nike’s Air Max range — from the latest Air Max 270 and Vapormax models, to late 90s throwbacks the Air Max 97 & 98 — the shoe that started it all, the Air Max 1, is still regarded by many as the best trainer of all time. Since its introduction in 1987, the Air Max 1 has grown in notoriety to become something of a connoisseur’s choice, with classic collaborative models from the likes of Patta and atmos commanding resale prices in the thousands. The shoe also holds a great deal of importance for Nike themselves, being a key part of their brand history. Back in the mid-1980s, while the brand had seen a great deal of success with earlier models, from the Cortez and Waffle-equipped running models to the global phenomena that were the Air Force 1 and Air Jordan 1, they were losing ground in terms of cultural cachet: Waffle soles just weren’t cool enough for the kids of the neon-drenched 80s.

Enter Tinker Hatfield. While Hatfield’s name is well-known today, often uttered in hushed tones at the reverence of a sneaker god, back in 1987 he wasn’t even part of Nike’s footwear division, instead employed as an architect to design retail and office spaces for the brand. Whether upper management saw Hatfield’s potential, or just because of staffing issues, he was eventually drafted into the footwear design team to inject a new perspective into the brand’s stagnating running lineup. With his architectural background, it should come as little surprise that Hatfield drew his major inspiration for the Air Max 1 from an unlikely place: the Centre Georges Pompidou building in Paris. Upending traditional design wisdom, the Centre Pompidou lays bare all of its inner workings — the air conditioning, water pipes and structural supports are all on the outside.

Nike's 'Revolution' Ad

While a seemingly small detail, the Air Max 1’s visible Air bubble at the heel was revolutionary. While Air cushioning technology had been in use at Nike for a while, the goal had been to make the cushioning slimmer and more concealed. Like the Centre Pompidou that inspired it, the Air Max 1 had the audacity to put the technological aspects of its design front and centre, a bold design move that met with enormous internal resistance at Nike headquarters. Nevertheless, Hatfield persisted with his vision and, with the help of some friends in higher places, the design was pushed through, and was an immediate success.

Nike Air Max 1 Navy Tour Yellow

Which brings us to today. As expected from a shoe from 1987, over the years the Air Max 1 has been the subject of numerous tweaks, changes and updates, much to the dismay of diehard fans, who weren’t enamoured with the new shape and materials. However, last year, in honour of the Air Max 1’s 30th anniversary, Nike listened to all the feedback from collectors and enthusiasts, and tasked its footwear design team to recreate the OG shape down to the most minute details. The result is very impressive, a throwback in the best possible sense, and the perfect template for a slate of all new summer-ready colourways.

Nike Air Max 1 Watermelon 02

Both pairs take the classic white and grey base of the original and add their own distinct twist. The first, dubbed the ‘Watermelon’ drenches the uppers in washed-out green and neon pink for some heady Miami Vice/South Beach vibes that are the very definition of ‘summer’. The other adopts the ever-popular ‘Michigan‘ colourway, with rich navy offset by bold yellow accents for a timeless collegiate look.

Nike Air Max 1 Michigan

Both styles are some of the best that Nike have put out for this legendary sneaker in a long time, and are sure to freshen up your footwear rotation in time for the warmer months. They will be available online at 08.00 BST on the 3rd of May, with an in-store release to follow. Make sure not to sleep if you want to grab a pair for yourself.

The Nike Air Span II Combines Modern Technology With A Retro Design

The History Of The Air Span

The Nike Air Span was initially released in ’89 with the II following closely in 1990, they were a favoured choice amongst runners thanks to their combination of durability and style, whilst also being cheaper than visible Air selections, since then they haven’t been seen for quite some time, until earlier this year when they resurfaced again, making a bold statement with a host of vibrant and retro colourways. The vintage runner was placed in Complex’s top 50 running sneakers of all time with them stating that “this (Air Span II) deserves a reissue, just so a new generation can appreciate this road running creation. Nike listened and brought it back for all the OG sneakerheads to feel nostalgia and to show the new generation the power of the Span.

Nike has done an impeccable job of keeping the design virtually indistinguishable from the original design with the same materials and branding, but they have used modern technology to take the comfort to a whole new level and usher the runner into a new era by combining modern comfort with a retro style.

Nike Flyprint 3D Technology

Have you heard of Nike Flyprint?

Nike Flyprint shows the huge progression that the American company is constantly making in regards to using innovative methods to create new sneakers and trump their competitors. It is the first fully 3-D printed textile upper on a sneaker and is being utilised to increase the performance of their athlete’s thanks to them being insanely lightweight and adapting the print to specific runners. The design has stemmed from that of the Vaporfly, Hyperfuse, Flywire and Flyknit but on another level to “achieve previously unimaginable performance solutions”.

Nike is hoping they can break the 2-hour mark for a marathon and make history as they came extremely close with Eliud Kipchoge running 2:00:25 in the Vaporfly 4%.

They have kept this technology under wraps very well, but have finally allowed the public to feast their eyes on true innovation. Below you can watch Nike’s official video on how its constructed.

Nike Shoe Therapy Video

A Little Shoe Therapy Is Needed

Nike has been showing us their down-to-earth humorous side recently with the Nothing Beats A Londoner video that released last month, their latest endeavour is in the form of ‘Shoe Therapy’ sessions where athletes like Draymond Green and the Revolution’air’ Sean Wotherspoon go to talk about their uncontrollable Sneaker addiction.

The video holds a slight truth as it’s something most of us can relate to, as your shoes are like a child to you that you nurture and take care of. More videos are going to follow from Nike, but for the moment you can check out their first episode ‘Its Gotta Be The Shoes’ which features American Track athlete and record holder Shalane Flannagan talks to Lena Thwaite about her totally justified obsession with her 4% Vaporfly. I don’t know about you but we are excited to see what sneakers the following episodes cover.
