Sock it to Me: The Maison Margiela Knit Sock Boot is Ready for Summer

One of the most prevalent footwear trends in the last decade has been the emergence of the sock-fit sneaker. Utilising new technologies like Nike’s Flyknit and adidas‘s rival Primeknit, the initial aim was to reduce weight and provide a more customised fit for athletics, particularly running, which then trickled down into the mainstream with the surging popularity of athleisure and luxury streetwear as the dominant forces in fashion. The minimal good looks and level of comfort offered by sock-like fit of trainers like the Nike Flyknit Racer and adidas Ultraboost earned them legions of fans, which has naturally attracted the attention of brands looking to offer a more luxurious, high-fashion alternative.

Enter Maison Margiela. From the brand’s very genesis, Maison Margiela’s raison d’etre has been to subvert and deconstruct trends, uniforms and classic clothing to create a unique vision of what fashion is and what it should be. Under the eye of their current designer, the infamous John Galliano, the Maison has turned their hand to the sock sneaker, taking the concept to its extreme with their Knit Sock Boot, which boasts rib-knit fabric uppers that are little more than literal socks, set atop a technical sneaker sole unit.

Like many of the Maison’s designs, it sounds absurd on paper, but the level of attention and care given to the materials, shape and detailing of the sneaker really elevate it into something special. This version is perhaps the best yet, pairing a bright optical white upper with a distressed sole unit to give both subtle contrast and a look that’s classically Margiela. In typical fashion, the sneaker’s only adornment is a care label that the designer has left purposely visible to the exterior, adopting the Maison’s signature low-key approach to branding.

Despite its unconventional look and avant-garde design, the Margiela Knit Sock Boot is just as versatile as any other white sneaker, owing to its slim profile and ‘blank canvas’ appearance. Pair it with cropped trousers, distressed jeans, even shorts; either way you’re guaranteed to turn heads this summer.

The adidas EQT Support Mid ADV Returns in a New Street-Ready Colourway

Earlier this year, we welcomed the latest addition to adidas’ revamped EQT family, the Support Mid ADV, to our sneaker shelves here at Aphrodite. Its sleek lines, expert colour blocking and comfortable tooling made it something of a store favourite. Now, just in time for Spring, the silhouette returns in an eyecatching new colourway with some serious curb appeal.

The lightweight, flexible Primeknit uppers are presented in a subtle black and grey striped pattern to the vamp, while the rear quarter boasts a white and grey base along with a contrasting embroidered heel cage for that familiar blend of comfort and support.

The sole is a compression-moulded EVA unit that provides the cushioned ride we’ve come to expect from the EQT range, and the finishing touch is added with the signature webbing 3 Stripes to the sides in a bold ‘EQT Yellow‘ colour for the perfect amount of colour pop.

Stone Island Goes Wild with the Alligator Camo Collection

Italian sportswear maestros Stone Island are no stranger to an unusual camouflage pattern; unsurprising given the brand’s deep-rooted military influence. Recently we’ve seen everything from a Grid Camo pattern made from hundreds of different sizes of the brand’s Compass logo, to the Ghost Piece collection, their own interpretation of the whole camouflage concept. But now for SS18 the brand takes real-world inspiration and twists it into something truly exotic: the Alligator Camo collection.

Within the brand’s vast archives of vintage sportswear and militaria, the design team discovered an obscure camouflage pattern used by the Polish Armed Forces in the late 1980s. Dubbed the Wz. 89 ‘Puma’ pattern and known colloquially as the ‘Frog’ or ‘Alligator’ camo, the pattern was only in use for a scant four years before being retired; it evidently didn’t work very well against the Polish forests. This short period of usage also means that original pieces in good condition are hard to come by, and are sought after by collectors.

Stone Island have used the original pattern as a base, but enhanced it with their usual blend of highly technical fabrics and unique treatment processes. The fabrics used are subjected to a six-colour printing process: five colours of pigment dye to build up the base, and a further polyurethane print which adds a textured, rubberised aspect to enhance the impact of the wild camo pattern.

The capsule comes in a bold emerald green shade and encompasses a jacket, shorts and sweatshirts. Stone Island keep outdoing themselves with more and more fabric alchemy, and the Alligator Camo pack is sure to be extremely popular this season. A firm feature in adidas’ roster of collaborators from across the globe, musician, producer and style influencer Pharrell Williams presents his latest footwear capsule with the 3 Stripes, encompassing two contrasting styles of his minimal Tennis HU sneaker.

Based on adidas’ ever-popular Stan Smith tennis shoe, mixed with the DNA of modern running sneakers, the Tennis HU boasts engineered Primeknit uppers for a comfortable sock-like fit, coming in a choice of the ever-popular ‘Oreo’ monochrome pattern, or a multi-coloured option that echoes Williams’ personal style.

Back to Disrupt: The adidas Prophere Returns for SS18

At the tail end of 2017, adidas dropped the Prophere, one of their most progressive — and aggressive — sneaker designs in years. With its overstated design elements and outsized sole unit, the Prophere was a hit with tastemakers and those looking to make an impact with their footwear, seeing adidas tapping into the trend for excessively chunky sneakers and adding their own unmistakeable twist.

Now the Prophere returns once more, in a militaristic Trace Olive colourway with shocking Solar Red accents, alongside a long-awaited Triple Black option. Both colourways retain the neoprene boot-fit upper with marled knit facing, oversized 3 Stripe lace stays and elasticated tongue loop, along with tonal iterations of the unmistakeable, sculpted sole unit that provides all-day comfort and an eyecatching appearance.
